Oct 23rd 2010 12:47PM Too many people think that all the government needs to do is mandate that manufacturers produce vehicles that achieve incredibly high mpg. But they don't realize that they won't have access to anything that seats six or more people, has a range of 400 miles and tows more than 5,000 lbs. while providing 5 star crash worthiness in a 35 mph collision with a fixed object and defense against a run in with an 80,000 lb. big rig. Further, a combined fuel economy standard of 60 mpg would mean that the highway mpg would have to be much greater. Maybe you could do that going only down hill, but it's not in the realm of current or forecast technology.
There are a number of cars that get 40 or more mpg right now, so why isn't everybody driving one? That's not what Americans want-even at double the current cost of fuel-and real Americans buy what they want, not what a limousine liberal bureaucrat tells them they need.
