Nov 2nd 2008 4:43PM Leave the mobile phone you use here in the USA at home! There is another very simple way, especially if you travel to the same continent on a regular basis. Buy an 'unlocked world' phone online before you go (just the phone -- NOT the SIM card). Once you are abroad, find the local mobile phone service store and purchase a pre-paid SIM card there to use on your new phone. You will now have a phone number that can be used abroad. I have been using my same 'TIM' SIM card that I purchased in Italy years and years ago. All I have to do is top it off at least once every 12 months (you should either be able to do this online or ask a friend in that country to help you out), and I can retain my Europe phone number. Every time I go abroad I bring this phone with me and leave my USA phone at home! I could take it to Japan and do the same thing as well -- Just switch out the SIM cards! It can be used in the USA, too, with a pre-paid AT&T SIM card....easy!
