International Value Destinations {Gadling}

Jan 17th 2009 11:39PM I just returned from my 2nd trip in less than 6 months and can't get enough of it. It's not for the faint of heart though, as the tourism infrastructure isn't in place like it is in Costa Rica, but I've made some great friends and welcome the lack of other "gringos" (exception being San Juan del Sur, which has unfortunately been discovered by the cruise ship industry).

Nov 29th 2008 10:00AM Brazil, by far. ANYWHERE in Brazil!

Instead of boycotting Utah, here's an opposite idea. If you're gay, head there in droves {Gadling}

Nov 27th 2008 9:41AM Well, actually marriage is both a religious and civil institution, and "gay people" are only asking to be allowed civil marriage. Based on your logic, if marriage is a solely religious institution, then the government should absolve all marriages (gay or straight) and simply institute civil unions for all couples, regardless of orientation, and leave "marriage" up to the churches. That would satisfy the Establishment Clause of the 1st Amendment.

These points were touched upon in the Goodridge vs. Department of Public Health verdict in Massachusetts:

"...the government creates civil marriage."

"Eliminating civil marriage would be wholly inconsistent with the Legislature's deep commitment to fostering stable families and would dismantle a vital organizing principle of our society."

So I think you've merged in your mind two different things Michele. There are several advantages to marriage that are still denied to gay people even through civil unions (A gay spouse from another country is not eligible for a green card, for example). I don't think a travel blog is really the appropriate venue for such a discussion as this, so I will end this here.

Travel deals abound for the holidays: Go for that dream vacation {Gadling}

Oct 26th 2008 5:20PM Agreed - my friend and I were patient and kept checking airfares to and from Managua, Nicaragua, for January and after several days of $1,000+ prices, suddenly we found one for $377 RT with ALL taxes and fees included. We snapped two of them up within minutes!!

With a nice hotel in a great area of the city (Le Pyramide) at only $58/night, We're getting a one-week vacation for just a little more than $1,200/person (which includes rental care and spending money). Can't go wrong!

Three Things the Press Coverage of RNC Didn't Show You about the Twin Cities {Gadling}

Sep 5th 2008 10:37PM Josh - my thoughts exactly. All conventions should be held in the middle of eastern Montana. At least they can't do much harm out there! (sorry Montana.. but it's true.)

Three Things the Press Coverage of RNC Didn't Show You about the Twin Cities {Gadling}

Sep 5th 2008 6:55PM When the DNC came to Boston in 2004, it turned the city in to a ghost town. It was great for me (as a resident) since I had all the restaurants and stores along the busiest Boston thoroughfares to myself. It wasn't great for the businesses though, and it ruined the year for some of them.

Where this idea that conventions are great for cities and their economies in a post-9/11 country perplexes me. Nowadays I would think a convention would be the last thing any major U.S. city would ever want within its borders. Between the security precautions (they actually closed down parts of the central artery in Boston during the DNC), the protests, and the negative economic impact (not to mention the lackadaisical attitude paid to the host city by the press), it really makes bad economic sense. Just me take on the topic..
