Fan Rant: What Part of 'Recession' Don't Theater Chains Get? {Cinematical}

Mar 29th 2010 2:00PM Unofficially knowing management of the major chains really well, the reality is that more people are going to movies, but buying less. Like in every depression time it happens.

This is a no brainer, since they have been doing this for years. Usually backed by the usual company nepotism and laziness. Aka check out next time you go to Regal's and witness it's Cafe Del Moro....not a company ,but the head of concession of Regal that has his family the Del Moro company supply ALL of Regal. No other vendors, unless through them.

Movie theaters are a badly designed food business. They try but fail unless they are hooked up with restaurants or bars, that smaller boutique movie chains are now doing. The prices are high still cause they are making up for a billion dollar business of those NCN video commercials failing in the economy right now.

A redvines costs the movie theater .79, but they charge over 2.50.

Popcorn it costs $5.00 a 10lb bag of seed and with $5.00 of oil create over 300 at over $4.00 large popcorns. Insane profit.

Some chains are restarting a refill policy, you buy a cup for $6.50, then bring it in and pay a $1.00 for the refill. But they know you will lose the cup, or you will sneak your own soda can in.

Also is there anything without cornsyrup there......hell no.

It is a lazy business, with so much profit, they don't have to do anything ....you still come and buy.

Sadly this is a cycle and theaters will die in 8 years with high prices, 3-d at home, and the video window crashing.

Making Movie Location Pilgrimages {Cinematical}

Sep 4th 2009 3:18PM Oh this is what I live for. I'm really bad at this, here is a list of where i have gone on pilgramages.

I try to reneact the shot and camera angle where the shot is. I actually have recently travelled with the my iphone and then stream the movie and line up the shot with my still camera to take the photo and figure out the exact camera placement.

So here are the places I went out of my way to see.

Here is the bond ones.
-Gimmelwald Switzerland for Her Majesty Secret Service
-Corfu greece, For your eyes only
-Cadiz spain, Die another day
-Monaco, Goldeneye
-Bilbao spain, World is not enough
-Eiffel Tower, View To a Kill
-Pinewood studios London england, almost every 007 film interior.

Here are the other ones.
-paris/coffeeshop for "Amelie"
-Paris, eiffel tower for "Condorman"
-Monaco, for "To catch a thief"
-Malaga Spain, for "Indy 3 Last Crusade", and also every major Spaghetti Western, "800 bullets", and "dr zhivago".
-Madrid Spain, El cortes Engles for "Crimen Ferpecto"
-Capri italy for "It happened in naples"
-Near Taromina Sicily for 'The Godfather"
-Edinbrough Scotland for "Black friars bobby"
- Rome for "Hudson Hawk"
-Cinecittia studios for "Rome" series, Spaghetti Westerns, Argento films, "Gangs of NY", and Hercules Series.
-San Francisco under Golden Gate for "Vertigo"
-Oxford for "Harry Potter"
-Vancouver BC for "Rumble in the bronx"
-Beijing China, Shaw bros Films/ Kill Bill
-Shanghai China, "Empire and the Sun"
-The Gorge OR for "Short Circuit" and "Twilight"
-Near Corvallis OR, for Stand by me.
-Salem OR "One Flew over the Cukoos nest"
-Cannon Beach/Astoria, OR "Goonies/ Indy 3 Last Crusade".

I'm only 32, so I have many places more to see. I'm kinda crazy, but to me if it was good enough to be shot in a movie, it usually is a beautiful place to visit. So this has become my obsession.

Sony Reminds Me That I'm a Home Theater Moron {Cinematical}

Sep 3rd 2009 6:11AM It depends on the movie, you try to as much as possible watch how the director intended. Watching a great film on your iPhone or on a 12 inch tv.....go kill yourself.

Films are much more than that, you need to have a great leveler to enjoy the film. I'm not enjoying 2001 on a pan and scan 12 inch set in mono. It's a disservice if you watch a film.

My opinions on 3d
Real d Digital 3d is great, but 2d digital projection sucks a bag of cocks. But 2d film is better than 2d digital projection. 2d digital projection has a problem, it ladders in vertical movement, and according to TI/Christie it makes some people lull to sleep. yeah it has to do with the rhythm of the video. It boggled me also. But 3d real d digital is differnt and flies at differnt 60 framerate and at 2k. I enjoy it with a silver screen, but the theater can't have any ambient light on, the projector shines through a split lens with a splitter, and with polorized glasses, you see one lens spin in one eye and another spin in the other eye. It works pretty well. But difficult to reproduce at home, for home theater....aka no ambient light, and a silver screen.

The dolby 3d is amazing, but you have to have motorized gglasses, kinda spendy. The process is what's being designed for the Sony sets coming in 2010.

The core of the story is, respect. Respect the filmmakers, try to see on a 40ft screen. Then watch it on home, but try to accomodate.

Sony Reminds Me That I'm a Home Theater Moron {Cinematical}

Sep 2nd 2009 6:27PM Dawn,

Your ok with the 27 inch tv, and an DVD player.
I agree with the jones keeping up BS, it's not worth it. Nor is HD. I'm a filmmaker and work with film and HD everyday. HD looks great is just a headache at 1080, and is not worth the upgrade from what you have. Until it gets to 4k, where it looks like film. Digital projectors right now in theaters shoot to 2k to 4k. Just wait till your tv dies, then upgrade. Now having a good sound system should be a priority. You need dolbly digital 5.1. and all speakers and sub. Now bluray is bs, anyone should ignore it until they have to upgrade their set and a 400 plus blue Ray is fucking antiquated. Buy a harddrrive and store it.

Now I admit I own a 301 DVD player, I bought it 9 years ago and works nice....but it was great cause I'm limited on space living on a houseboat, and I got a modern arhitecture thing going on. But now I use my 300hr TiVo more, cause it user friendly.

Spend money on a nice system. A 36 inch crt, an exspensive user friendly 300w or more 5.1 sound system ( I own a marantz) Good thx
speakers...none of that Bose shit. And upgrade to HD or 16x9
or blu Ray if you really need to. Like gun to the head you have to.

Now a little secret, I shoot live sports, and some special news programs. We shoot in HD, but the studios the sat truck broadcast to, takes up too much bandwith, that it shows at 720. So in otherwords you bought an exspensive 16x9 HD 1080 flat screen and were broadcasting in the quality of your 27 inch CRT 4:3 set.

From,
Sigfried

ps this doesn't excuse dawn from not watching shindlers list and Aaron not watching shawshank.

Movies I Will Never See: Cannibal Holocaust {Cinematical}

Aug 12th 2009 7:15PM Showed this one at a 35mm film fest in Portland Oregon ( Grindhouse film fest). We warned people before the show and during the film we had two breakups and a divorce. The divorce was in the lobby, the lady was so mad, yelled out we need a divorce! And tried to throw a rope stantion.

We showed the movie based on a dare by the Alamo guys.

Plus we had a guy, who actually was pickiting the theater for animal cruielty. It was a bizarre screening, but a fun one.

Rogen & Apatow Speak Out on Heigl v. 'Knocked Up' {Cinematical}

Jul 31st 2009 11:56AM Seth Rogen was on the radio show Opie and Anthony show right after the stern show in the same building. At the end of the show the topic on the show was shitty movies while also commedian Louis CK was in studio. during the interview Louis CK wasn't thinking and was looking at crappy movie posters and said, at least you weren't in a crappy Kathrine Heigel movie. Rogen quickly replied, oh yes I have.

It was a great interview.

Weekend WTF: Building Up Viral Movie Buzz {Cinematical}

Jun 28th 2009 8:26PM Dark knight was Warner bros not Sony.

Dark knight was still wins hands down for their marketing, the amount of viral was amazing, like the bowling ball, the cake with a cell phone in it, for secret showings, or what about it's trailer or DVD box that was jokerized.
