Two oddball tips for making a long-haul flight more comfortable {Gadling}
Nov 11th 2009 9:22AM Very few airlines even give out pillows anymore. Plus, you can't bring water through security anymore, so you're stuck looking for the $10 bottle of 2L at the newsstand.
How one minute can cost you $530 at Calgary International Airport {Gadling}
Mar 17th 2009 1:06PM Rules are in place to allow the airline to operate efficiently (imagine if EVERYONE showed up 10 minutes before flight time). At the same time, there needs to be some level of reasonableness. 1 minute? If there wasn't a tremendous line, they should have cut her some slack. If the computer system is the constraint, they need to fix that.
I once was travelling from Newark to Toronto on AC. I got to the gate (pre-9/11 and pre-online check in) about 65 minutes before flight time to find a huge line to check in and no gate agents. The agents showed up 10 minutes before flight time and my pre-reserved seat was given away to people who checked in at the ticket counter (as was about 30 other passengers). I eventually got on the plane when a passenger mysteriously debarked before they shut the door, but still...
That was one of the last times my rear has been in an AC seat.
Life Nomadic: How Airport Metal Detectors Work {Gadling}
Mar 5th 2009 4:51PM I am not sure that all metal detectors are set to equivalent sensitivities which will make "ensuring" that you can pass through all them impossible. Back in the late 90s, I used to travel out of LAX frequently. One day, I took a day trip to SJC and later in the day, I had to pick someone up from a different terminal at LAX. I was wearing the same clothes/shoes and had the same pocket contents. I did not set off the detector the first two times of the day, but did the third. They claimed it was my shoes.
There are no guarantees heading through airport security.

Oct 7th 2008 11:56PM I'd take my wife and we'd enjoy a second honeymoon. Our first one was unfortunately cut short by the poor health of my wife's father (who passed away a short time later). We both enjoy Europe (she used to live in France, so I'm sure we'd take a side trip there).
Congrats on the anniversary and keep up the good work!
Fire in tunnel under the English Channel halts Eurostar traffic {Gadling}
Sep 12th 2008 6:40PM The reason why underwater tunnels do not collapse from the weight of the river above them is air pressure. Air is pumped into the tunnel and the positive pressure keeps the water out. You'll notice the air pressure if you take the train into Manhattan on either the Northeast corridor or even moreso on the PATH trains or subways stations near water tunnels.
Gadling goes camping (win free Coleman stuff!) {Gadling}
Aug 25th 2008 11:04AM My wife and I just got back from a camping trip to New Hampshire. It was my first time to NH and we had a great time. My wife used to go camping with her family growing up and hasn't gone in 10 years. She really enjoyed it, although her father's recent passing made it somewhat sad for her.
