Americans prefer independence (when traveling) {Gadling}

Jul 21st 2009 8:28AM My wife and I have been traveling the UK, Europe, and Canada for the past ten years under tha package deal with Globus. It's easier on us for them to have all the arrangements made and we just follow 'em. In my opinion, the hotels we stay at are better, travel is better ('cause I ain't driving), getting into attractions are better (I'm not standing in line trying to get tickets or passes), better meals (they know go to some of the better restaurants) and I don't have to fiddle too much with the luggage.
Some may not like the early morning rousting to get breakfast and be on the road, but my wife and I have never had a problem with it. I believe we've seen things and been to places that we normally would not have visited. We're quite satisfied with our choice to travel on a packaged tour.
We still travel independently in the US, though. Traveling in a packaged tour inside the US hasn't been to our liking. Too expensive and I just can't see doing it that way. Maybe it's tha language thing, don't know.

A legendary stone circle in England {Gadling}

Jul 14th 2009 3:09PM Live just down the street on the road from Hook Norton to Sibford Gower; at Croft Lodge, the Lucas pig farm. I was in the Air Force then, stationed twenty-five miles away at RAF Upper Heyford. The King Stone wasn't gated, then. There are smaller versions of the Rollright Stones dotting the English countryside. Nice to find once in awhile. When I lived in the village of Buckingham, my next door neighbor worked for the RAC. His job was to map out short automotive day trips which included walks in the countryside. Found a few that ways, too. My wife and I are going back to England again this fall. Looking at the west country this time. Stonehenge to Lands End.

Learn a new language, and the Silbo Gomero {Gadling}

Sep 29th 2008 6:54PM Been there, done that, unfortunately, no t-shirt. There's a little cafe in Gomera where the tale of the "whistling language" was told. A patron was asked to whisper a request to a waiter whom whistled the instructions to a waitress. The waitress followed the request to the letter. The request? Place a bottle of beer and a glass on a platter, open the bottle, deliver it to the table, pour the beer and pluck the handkerchief from the man's jacket.

A visual history of the BBC "TV Detector" van {Autoblog}

Jun 10th 2008 12:36PM I lived in the Midlands in the '70s. BBC1, BBC2 and Thames Television were all you could get. The TV Tax was only 25 pounds. Most people hired their TVs. I remember the bloke living next door; you could hear him deposit 50p coins into his TV for and evening of viewing. And believe me, the Brits were in love with American shows.
Now I've got digital cable; 151 channels and nothing on!
