Britain Thumbs Nose at Metric System; America Cheers {Gadling}

May 20th 2007 12:02PM The other problem is that some measures, like gallons, are different in the US from what they are in the UK - a US gallon is 3.8 litres, which us Brits reckon is short measure - ours is 4.5 litres. And your pints are smaller, too, which is really annoying to British beer drinkers until they realise what's going on.

Tampa Bay's Big Cat Rescue {Gadling}

Mar 20th 2007 4:06PM Truly big cats such as lions don't make pets. But several of the medium sized cats, such as servals, apparently accustom themselves very readily to humans. It's not just a size thing though - the ocelot can't be tamed, whereas lynxes apparently can. But keeping any such animal requires patience and hard work, as well as that the human makes certain accommodations to the animal - and not the other way round! Glad to hear the Tampa organisation is helping these big beasts recover from their sad experiences.

We visited a lovely French park in Auneau, near Chartres, which specialised in preserving rare cat breeds including fishing cats, sand cats, several types of tigers, jaguars, and jaguarondi. It's now moved to Nesles in Seine-et-Marne department, having outgrown its original location. www.parc-des-felins.com

Plush Places for Traveling Pets {Gadling}

Jul 5th 2006 12:51PM I wonder if someone can afford to keep an otter as a pet, why don't they start an otter sanctuary? There are breeds around the world that need help - if I had a few million bucks I would choose the Iberian lynx, a wonderful cat that has seen its environment disappear and because of its wide-ranging habits, doesn't take well to a cage. But I wouldn't want to take one to a hotel!

My two cats do very well on Royal-Canin and whatever they can catch (this week: two mice and five inedible shrews, plus two butterflies and a moth). And when I travel, they stay home - where they prefer to be.
