Put those breasts away: Woman asked to cover up while breastfeeding during flight {Gadling}
Aug 12th 2008 1:36PM Margaret Dykes - would you like to eat your meal in the restroom? You of all people should know how messy those restrooms are - guys missing the toilet, etc.

Aug 11th 2008 7:50PM Kitty - perhaps you have not traveled with a baby recently, but do you realize how much stuff a mom must take traveling with a baby (diapers, extra clothing, blanket, car seat, stroller)? And now you are suggesting she haul a breast pump on board? She can only bring 3 oz of breastmilk in a bottle (that is IF the baby takes a bottle). And where is she going to pump her milk? Who is going to hold the baby? Perhaps dad could hold baby in this situation, but what about a mom traveling alone?
Also, would you want to pump breastmilk in an airline bathroom and pour it into your baby's bottle? Yuck. And she's going to have to clean the pump's accessories in the plane's restroom? I'm having a hard time wrapping my brain around your suggestion. Where would the stuff dry off?
Now think of how easy it would be to discreetly lift your top and have a baby suckle quietly. There is nothing to pack, nothing to clean up, no handing baby off to someone else to hold while pumping, etc. 99% of the time no one would even notice. It's a no brainer as far as I'm concerned.

Aug 11th 2008 7:27PM We were discussing babies, not children. I've done a lot of traveling with babies on planes. For young babies, there are not a lot of choices when they are in pain or hungry. Many young babies refuse bottles and pacifiers.
And from the article, it says the mom nursed her son discreetly. There are no private areas on planes and if a baby is not used to a blanket covering his head, it might create more of a scene than not covering.

Aug 11th 2008 7:06PM No where in this article does it mention that the mother exposed ANYTHING. It only says she lifted up her top discreetly. So all the posts about this woman exposing herself are pure speculation.

Aug 11th 2008 4:33PM My husband stares when he sees women giving babies a bottle. He wonders why that baby is missing out on the best substance that hasn't yet come close to being replicated.

Aug 11th 2008 4:24PM Fernando - I suppose you'd rather enjoy your trip with a screaming baby?
It's a lot easier for you to act like a mature man and divert your eyes than for an infant to ignore hunger pains or ear pressure pain.

Aug 11th 2008 4:21PM Haven't you heard about liquid restrictions on flights these days? Last I heard, the flight attendants don't offer breastmilk on their beverage cart.

Aug 11th 2008 4:09PM Brenda, why bring up the subject of your "prowess" sister-in-law? She obviously has issues. This is not about an exhibitionist. This is about a mom discreetly nursing her baby in a row next to family members.

Aug 11th 2008 4:03PM Or let's vote and see if the passengers would rather have a screaming baby for the flight or a happy baby nursing quietly in a row with family members?

Aug 11th 2008 4:01PM Karin - I have nursed all seven of my babies. There were a couple who absolutely refused to nurse if I covered them with a blanket. But seriously, there was no need to cover them as you couldn't see anything when I nursed my babies by lifting up my loose top. In the article, it says she was nursing discreetly. If that is true, most likely nothing was showing anyway and the person who objected was not objecting to the exposing of the breast, but the IDEA of breastfeeding. That person needs to get over it.
Another thought - I've flown a lot with my babies and the sucking definitely helps when the ears start to pop at high elevations. I wonder if the passengers would have preferred to have a screaming baby or allow mom to nurse?
