Venice hosts its own funeral {Gadling}

Nov 16th 2009 11:03AM Good luck with that. I'm sure they are an inconvenience, but it's not the tourists that are driving out the venetians, it's the water. The houses and the land are sinking, even though the city has taken drastic measures to stop this, you still can't fight mother nature. Houses are expensive because they require a lot of upkeep. And not simple slap some paint on it upkeep.

They are crumbling from underneath. And to fix that type of problem requires an owner with deep pockets. Some (or most from my perspective) of the mansions and homes have been converted to hotels.

White House pushing for answers to airline industry woes {Gadling}

Nov 16th 2009 10:55AM This is not true. Seats have been getting narrower on each generation of aircraft. For example a 727 seat is 34" wide. A 777 is 33". A A319, I believe is 28". A longhaul aircraft will certainly be more comfortable than a shuttle (airlines aren't immune to class action cases of DVT) . Boeing believes that 32" is the optimal width. But people are willing to put up with less if they can pay less.

Also keep in my mind that things can be perceived. More seats per per row "feels" more cramped even if the width hasn't changed. Manufacturers have lightened aircraft over time (thinner shells, thinner bulkheads) and the airlines have put more seats in the resulting space. Seat material has gotten lighter and thinner. So more room for more seats. Even though you're seat width hasn't changed much, you are sitting much closer together than 20 or 30 years ago.

Airlines not taking any swine flu risks - bumping sick passengers {Gadling}

Nov 12th 2009 6:51AM Almost a decade ago I got really sick right before a flight and stayed with my friends. I showed up a few days later with my ticket and a physicians note. The agent waived the reticketing fee.

In the current climate I wouldn't chance it. Even if I was at death's door I still would try to get on the plane. I have no confidence the airline would show any sympathy this time around.

The best stinkin' food in Asia {Gadling}

Nov 4th 2009 4:05AM I've never seen loved and hated as much as durian. When I was in Thailand a lot of the people were eating it. Almost all the restaurants, business, and malls had signs in big letters that it was not welcome. Some restaurants did serve it. You just had to eat it outside.

iPhone app claims 95% piracy rate {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Oct 29th 2009 5:47AM @15: I see where you're trying to go but how many households have more than 2 iphones? Most poeple are aware they can license 5 computers but I doubt they are giving their friends and colleagues the same level of access like family would have.

Why people aren't flying. (Hint: It's not just the fares) {Gadling}

Oct 23rd 2009 10:08AM I travel on concession and in most cases I'd rather take the train than go all the way out to the airport, pray for a seat, deal with security, wait for the, inevitably delayed, pushback, and then find transportation into my destination city.

Comparatively, flying costs me little but I prefer not to fly when I can. Not to mention the airline makes me feel guilty every time I use my concession.

3GS shortages expected overseas due to demand {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}

Oct 16th 2009 12:02PM I hope I don't have to wait. I just sent my phone out for repair (32GB 3GS, the rarest) and it's got all my phone numbers. In the meantime, I'm using my old Nokia and it's like going back on a bicycle after leaving the racetrack.

Singapore - Taking on the Lion City {Gadling}

Oct 14th 2009 4:50AM Singapore is great. It's also a great model city that shows a functional government. I don't know how crime figures into the overall scheme of the city. I did find some sketchy areas while touring the city. But not South Bronx sketchy :-)

Also you won't find a lot of things in their city. Unemployment is low because they don't have unemployment insurance so you'll starve. Begging is illegal, as is homelessness.

Apartments are really small so you have more disposable income. It's hard to buy lots of things if you have no room and practically everything is inexpensive. And most things are bought in cash.

Flight attendant sues Oprah over sex allegations {Gadling}

Oct 14th 2009 4:19AM I wouldn't call it a he said, she said. Looks more like she said, they said. Unless she can get the fired pilot to back up her story then it doesn't look like it would go in her favor. $300,000 is such a small amount (for Oprah) that chances are she settles for a quarter of that to shut up and go away.

10 Things to Eat in Singapore {Gadling}

Oct 8th 2009 12:34PM Some of the best food I've ever had was at this little taxi rest station under the bridge to Sentosa island. Most of it was hallal, Indian, singaporean?. And the price was amazing. I must've looked like a typical fat American because my tray was overflowing with food. By the time I finished I had to let the belt out a little. I don't know how I made it back to the hotel.
