Buck up: Soros says dollar will remain world's go-to currency {Daily Finance}
Apr 7th 2009 1:53PM Did you know that George Soros would not be a multi-billionaire if it were not for the international language Esperanto?
Born in Hungary in 1930 as Gyorgy Schwartz, the family changed its name in 1936 to Soros, which in Esperanto means "to soar."
The Soros name-change was an effort to protect the Jewish family from the rise of fascist rulers and the whole family spoke Esperanto at home.
As a native Esperanto speaker, (someone who has spoken Esperanto from birth), George Soros defected to the West in 1946, while attending an Esperanto youth meeting in Switzerland.
Esperanto enabled Soros both to defect, and to become the 28th most wealthy man in the World, according to the Forbes rich list.

Although International Mother Language Day is now over, you may be interested in the contribution, made by the World Esperanto Association, to UNESCO's campaign for the protection of endangered languages.
The following declaration was made in favour of Esperanto, by UNESCO at its Paris HQ in December 2008. http://portal.unesco.org/culture/en/ev.php-URL_ID=38420&URL_DO=DO_PRINTPAGE&URL_SECTION=201.html
The commitment to the campaign to save endangered languages was made, by the World Esperanto Association at the United Nations' Geneva HQ in September.

Nov 14th 2008 2:06PM Hope you don't mean Esperanto Theo!
Congratulations to Firefox for being ahead of the field in introducing Esperanto.
Only now is it being generally understood that the use of this planned language is widespread.
Esperanto is in the top 100 languages, out of 6,800 worldwide, according to the CIA factbook. It is the 17th most used language in Wikipedia, and in use by Skype, and Facebook, as well as Firefox. Yet these facts are little known.
Thankyou again Mozilla!
LPGA's English-Only Rule Backfires, Could Lead to Lost Sponsors {Fanhouse Golf Blog}
Sep 3rd 2008 3:24PM I think that the LPGA's decision smacks of xenophobia.
At least the Beijing Olympics appointed an Esperanto translator, and CRI broadcast daily, about the Games, in this language.
If you doubt this you can check http://esperanto.cri.cn
PGA Tour Stars That Don't Speak English Very Well Aren't Happy About LPGA Policy {Fanhouse Golf Blog}
Aug 29th 2008 3:30PM I see that the dictatorial imperative that "everyone must speak English, has now extended to golf.
At least the Beijing Olympics appointed an Esperanto translator, and CRI boadcast about the Olympic Games in this language.

Aug 16th 2008 5:34AM I see that Obama wants everyone to learn a foreign language, but which one should it be?
The British learn French, the Australians study Japanese and the Americans prefer Spanish.
And this leaves Mandarin Chinese out of the equation.
Interestingly nine British MP's have nominated Esperanto for the Nobel Peace Prize 2008.

Aug 4th 2008 3:40PM It seems that the biggest problem for the Beijing Olympics is not the smog, but the lack of a common language.
Interestingly the Beijing Olympics have appointed an Esperanto translator.
I hope that is repeated in London!
