This has nothing to do with their high rate of alcoholism, and has everything to do with the destruction of the ideas of family, duty and commitment. Thinking that they are "advanced" and "liberated" from dogmas and expectations, people in Scandinavia are actually miserable in the face of completed absence of any guides in life. The countries are awash in divorce and single motherhood. The word "marriage" no longer means anything, and sexual partners are selected overnight, not as a result of two compatible people gravitating towards each other.
Scandinavia is a wonderful place to visit, but living there is the last thing I'd ever do. One time was enough.

Oct 4th 2008 12:54AM These endless sneering comments and obsessive fault-searching are making me roll my eyes. Seriously, what the hell is wrong with you people? TV is intended for pure entertainment; one more time: it is designed for enjoyment, not necessarily realism. I enjoyed the show. I approached it without a prejudice, and had fun watching it. As far as the "cheesiness" goes, there wasn't even much difference from the original KR.
If you don't like it, no one is forcing you to watch it.
Kudos to Ben for being the only sneerless voice out here.

Bulgakov, Tolstoi, Nabokov, Chekhov, Blok, Ahmatova, Cvetaeva, Pushkin, Lermontov, Gogol and Dotoyevsky are only but one layer of a culture. There is one more, much bigger layer of the Russian culture. The culture of alcoholism. The culture of wife-beating. The culture of whining. The culture of screwing someone over and being proud of it. The culture of reckless driving because you have a bigger SUV. The culture that accepts government corruption as given and doesn't do sh#t about it.
The culture where a Minister's son can run over a woman at 250 km/h, kill her and get away with that.
That culture.
So, before you go on with your Nashi propaganda about other people not having culture, take a careful look in the mirror.
And, btw, I'm Russian. Piss off.
