Galley Gossip: Flight Attendant Pet Peeve #3: You want me to do what? {Gadling}
Jul 18th 2008 4:39PM James, you're another ignoramus...
You have flight attendants because the FAA requires that you have flight attendants. Their duties and responsibilities are spelled out in detail in FAA regulations (and augmented with further instructions from each specific company). And I have news for you: FAA regulations don't conform to your ignorant ideas about personal servants.
25 years ago things were much "nicer" in your definition because the airlines charged you for all those extra personnel to satisfy your whims (and even earlier they charged you even more). Then the legacy airlines felt that they had to compete with the cut-rate carriers whose business model truely was to treat you like a passenger on a bus. Now with the price of fuel going through the roof and for some reason airlines being unwilling to raise their fares to cover their costs, the "service" in the cabin has been cut to the bare bones. Hang around long enough though and your options will be even more limited as carrier after carrier will go out of business.
So your beef is with the people, whoever they are, who control fuel prices, and with the airline executives of the legacy airlines who are still trying to deliver the old image of the legacy airlines at the operating cost of the cut-rate airlines (many of which have already gone out of business).
Grow up.

Jul 17th 2008 11:08PM Kim W, I find your story incredible.
You had just had a heart transplant? You were not fully recovered (weighing only 78 pounds)? You were not accompanied? Your doctor let you do this??? You apparently (as implied in your comment) did not make your condition known to the gate agent when you checked in?
Should someone have helped you with your bag? Yes, absolutely - by the able-bodied person who should have accompanied you.
In your comment, you're suggesting that you looked just like everybody else, yet the FA was supposed to have a crystal ball to know your special needs?
Incredible! Anyway, glad you made it.

Jul 17th 2008 6:19PM Now we have a heated race for who is going to be the biggest Jerk of the Day: "John" or "Seawitchfromsaipain." I don't know, it's getting close; either of them could come off winning the award.

Jul 17th 2008 5:45PM OK, I nominate "John" (alias Lindsay Sluthan) as the Jerk of the Day. Any seconds on that nomination?
Seriously, "John," you're the one with a people problem. Did you forget to take your medications this morning?

Jul 17th 2008 11:01AM Oops. What happened? My reply was directed to a snarky comment by "John" that seems to have disappeared...

Jul 17th 2008 10:42AM I see you've still got your attitude problem, John (though you have toned down the rhetoric this time).
John is the perfect example of the kind of jerk who spoils the whole flight experience. So next time you wonder why FAs might have developed a bad attitude, just think about all the Johns of the world who go through life convinced they are oh so priviledged - in airplanes, in hotels, in restaurants, in taxi cabs, etc., etc.; narcissitic, juvenile, egotistical, bullying behaviour is what I call it.
"Respect" begets "courtesy," and it works both ways.

Jul 16th 2008 6:43PM Maria, it sounds like you have a few beefs about your job, too. And guess what? - you just voiced them, loud and clear! So it sounds like you and FAs have a lot in common, including the fact that both of you put your life on the line protecting the public.

Jul 16th 2008 6:20PM "...the Gestapo tactics of the TSA, ... but don't throw those obnoxious kicking and screaming kids out the window, etc., etc. ... Now it should be banned by the Geneva Conventions as torture....and flight attendants with the nasty attitudes of some who write on this blog seen as war criminals administering the torture."
Just a bit hyberbolic/hypertonic, are we, John?
I have a recommendation for you: go back to reading and commenting at your political blogs where you undoubtedly learned your commenting technique.

Jul 15th 2008 3:52PM Whoa-Whoa-Whoa!! Are you actually trying to tell me that FA's are not my personal servants? But-But-But!! I'm supposed to be so PRIVILEGED!
(Actually, this story reminds me of my favorite grocery store pet peeve. I go through the store reaching and stooping to handle each item to put into my basket. When I get to the check-out, I'm asked if I need help getting this to my car. H-m-m-m, let's see... I moved every item from the shelf or cabinet into my basket, but I can't reverse the process when I get to my car? So I fail to grasp the concept - probably because I'm just an ordinary guy, and not one of those priviledged people.)
