Are hybrid and electric airplanes ready for commercial debut? {Autoblog Green}

Jun 12th 2010 8:12PM I am a pilot and I have to say that commercial aviation will be the last industry to adopt electricity as a means of propulsion. Small, light general aviation aircraft can fly very short distances on battery power, but large scale commercial applications are not on the horizon for many, many decades. Even the exiting general aviation eclectic aircraft have more in common with a motorized glider than a typical airplane. It is simply a matter of energy density, as the batteries that would contain enough energy as a full tank of aviation fuel would weigh several orders of magnitude more than the fuel, and take up several orders of magnitude more space.

The real environmental benefits in commercial aviation will be seen through biofuels and electrification of ground support equipment. Another new technology will be electric tugs that pull commercial aircraft to the runway, as a surprisingly large amount of fuel is wasted taxiing on the ground, where turbine engines are terribly inefficient.

Aug 1st 2008 9:55AM Hey, quit dissin Denver! Ever heard of the Rocky Mountains? There's tons to do here! I know many a New Yorker who came to Denver for vacation and had a great time. You may not be aware, but there are certain sports like skiing, snowboarding, hiking, etc that are much more fun here than in Central Park or even Cancun.
