Gadling giveaway - Win a $20 Groupon gift certificate! {Gadling}
Oct 21st 2010 3:04AM Oh man, what have I NOT used Groupon for? My first ever purchase was for a catamaran tour of San Francisco Bay, that I used when my old roommate came to town to visit. Since then, it's been mostly food, as well as coffee, drinks, massages, and really, sometimes more than I know what to do with. I've let a few expire, having never gotten around to using them!
White Collar Travel: Airline reward programs do it wrong {Gadling}
Apr 2nd 2010 2:34PM Isn't this why mileage programs allow you to earn status both with total qualifying miles flown, as well as total qualifying segments flown? With SkyMiles, the first level is reached by flying either 25K qualifying miles, OR 30 qualifying segments. If you live in a non-hub airport, almost any round-trip will rack up at least 4 segments, even if you're traveling just a short distance. That makes a flight from, say, BOS-JFK just as valuable as JFK-SFO.
Also, at least with SkyMiles, you DO get a fare bonus if you book in the higher fare classes...50% qualifying mile bonus! So they're rewarding for both distance and money spent.
Programs like Southwest's RapidRewards are segment-based only, which gets kind of annoying for those flying long trips. And something like Virgin America's Elevate is totally cost-based, which...again, seems kinda silly. The frequency of taking those SFO-LAX flights don't mean a whole lot, even though each flight also earns the airline ancillary revenue. Would you rather reward someone who spends $400 on one trip more with one bag fee, or someone who flies 4 $100 trips, but generates 4x the bag fee (which quickly adds up)?

Poll: Have you ever passed up the cheapest airfare to avoid a bad airline? {Gadling}
Nov 3rd 2009 2:37PM I think sometimes that this is the demise of airlines these days. I know I've since scrapped airlines like Southwest and AirTran from my lists because I got tired of cattle-call seating and pretzels in my seat with those 20 minute turntimes. I don't care if Delta is 80 bucks more if I know that I get to choose my seat ahead of time and have a clean plane.
