On long-term travel, snobbery & judgmental blogging {Gadling}

Aug 14th 2010 9:51PM Carlos,

I didn't say you had to like or agree with Matt's article.

Re Pico Iyer, it's funny you mention him because he wrote a piece in the NY Times that had a somewhat similar response. I wrote about it here:

On long-term travel, snobbery & judgmental blogging {Gadling}

Aug 14th 2010 9:19AM I am kind of surprised that more long term travelers aren't responding to the needless and unfair public bashing we're taking here in the comments.

Of course long term travelers think long term travel is better FOR THEM.  We make huge personal sacrificies to attain this lifestyle and it is extremely clear to us from the get go that this lifestyle is not for everyone.

The fact is, Matt was obviously rushed in writing this article and neglicted to make the "why we travel" read "why we long term travelers travel".  Even then, I might not agree with his points, but to extrapolate it into this idea that long term travelers on the whole or in part think they are better?  Please!  We take a personal beating from our friends and family when we make the leap.  Believe me, we're aware that "working stiffs" have very good reasons for what they do.  They are our reasons too.  Do you think I don't have friends or family? I am accutely aware because I miss those people everyday.  Mike doesn't have a clue what he's talking about.

At worse, I think you can accuse long term travel bloggers of being over zealous or sloppy writers.  To imply that we're clueless about what we've given up is insulting.  And anyway, why is Mike reading long term travel blogs if he doesn't like that lifestyle?  Does he honestly expect us to stop what we're writing in order to praise people who don't travel?  We write about what we know, and at least for me, the intent is to help people with similar interests.  Helping people make a life change is why I blog... it's a modest goal and I think Mike has completely missed the point.

(Also to anyone who wants to know the real story, go read some of Matt's older posts.  As others have pointed out, he's been careful to not glamourize his lifestyle and often talks openly about the struggles he faces)

British Airways and Iberia to MERGE {Gadling}

Jul 30th 2008 9:27PM I love Iberia, because I fly with my two large dogs in cargo, and they are the most flexible on the size of cage! I hope they don't change anything before my Sept 20th flight back to the states, or else I will have two very sad pups.

Still I think these types of things can go either way: convince people not to drive, or a personal challenge to blow over the line... don't think it's going to convert many...
