The Playboy jet: How Hugh Hefner traveled in style {Gadling}
Mar 3rd 2011 1:34AM Oh man... That guy's life doesn't suck. The wackiest thing in the plane from a technology standpoint is the 'portable' 2-inch quadruplex videotape machine (most of which were the size of a refrigerator in 1969) that probably required as much maintenance as the DC-9's jet engines.
I remember seeing this thing parked on the ramp at the St. Louis airport when I was a kid. Me and my sixth-grade buddies talked for a week at school about what we thought went on inside the plane...
Thanks for posting this.
Hero Qantas Pilot Says A380 'Absolutely Safe' {AOL Travel News}
Feb 15th 2011 8:35PM Hmmm... Sounds an awful like, "God himself could not crash this airliner." I'd give yourself a little wiggle room.
No disrespect intended to the flight crew, though. Great bit of airmanship to bring this one home. The more you read about this incident, the more thankful you become that the cockpit crew had their heads on straight.
Jay Cutler Nonchalantly Bails on Bears' Title-Game Loss {Fanhouse NFL Blog}
Jan 24th 2011 5:13PM Thought I was watching "Any Given Sunday," when the starting QB goes out with an injury, the backup soon to follow, and the 3rd stringer goes in and shows a tremendous amount of heart. Caleb Haney shrugged off an interception, came back to score right away, and damn near tied the game. If he'd pulled that off, he'd never have to buy his own dinner in Chicago ever again. As it was, the kid showed a ton of grit and moxie. "Here's to you, Mr. Never Heard Your Name Before Third String Chicago Quarterback..."
James MacArthur, 'Hawaii Five-O' Star, Dies at 72 {PopEater}
Oct 28th 2010 2:38PM I believe he was also married, for a time, to Melody Patterson, who played the feisty Wrangler Jane on TV's "F Troop." RIP, Danno.
Flight Attendant Blows His Top, Yells at Passengers and Bolts Down Emergency Slide {AOL Travel News}
Aug 10th 2010 1:49PM Where to start? Well, flying sure isn't what it used to be, and to make any money at all, airlines have had to tighten up seat space and stack passengers in like cordwood. But people just want the lowest fare possible, (I'm certainly no exception) crowded flights are the norm, and tempers can get a little hot now and again. No one's said it yet, but this seems pretty similar to road rage when someone's on the edge and finally snaps. I don't blame the guy, though, because passengers basically can act like animals. It's unbelievable how rude our society has become - trash talking, getting in people's faces, and it's so unnecessary.
That plane's going to be out of action for a couple of days, too. I understand that it costs about 8-10 thousand dollars to re-pack that slide, test it, inspect it, and clear the plane for flight. He sure went out in style.
Lindsay Lohan's Plan to Stay Out of Jail {PopEater}
Jul 12th 2010 2:54PM Lindsay's knucklehead "friend" needs to keep her freaking mouth shut. Judges don't particularly like being called out in the media, and besides, I don't see a groundswell of spontaneous protesters taking to the streets to march in her defense. "The only thing she did wrong was hire the wrong attorney..." (?!?!) Please, she's gotten preferential treatment already because she is a celebrity. Anyone else who had gotten 2 DUI's, blown-off mandatory meetings and court appearances would have been on the prison boxing team a long time ago. I love the kid, she's very talented, but she (and her 'friends') need to learn that this is what happens to real people when they screw up.
Terrafugia Transition flying "car" gets special FAA exemption, sees clear skies ahead? {Autoblog}
Jun 30th 2010 2:53PM The flying car has been tried before, and like the Amphicar (which as they said, wasn't much of a boat, wasn't much of a car) this machine will probably have deficiencies in both categories of vehicles. Also, will every routine service or repair on the automobile part of this vehicle have to be done by an FAA-approved mechanic with the proper maintenance logging procedures? Just a thought...

Why can't planes fly near volcanic ash? A (very) brief look at engine failure {Gadling}
Apr 20th 2010 6:41PM I know it's a pain, but they need to be patient with this volcanic ash business. Just ask anyone on the British Airways flight over Indonesia in the early 80's. They flew through a volcanic ash cloud which caused all 4 engines to flame-out, and sandblasted the pilot's windshield so that the flight crew could barely see forward. It's nasty stuff, and since that ash cloud was dry, it didn't show up on the plane's weather radar, and they had no idea what was happening. Major damage to plane despite engine re-start and safe landing.
Boeing Knocks Ryanair's Idea to Ax Toilets for More Seats {AOL Travel News}
Apr 15th 2010 9:20PM To people in the US who don't know much about Ryanair, they've carved out quite a niche for themselves in Europe as a completely no-frills, ultra-low cost, low-fare operation. But, everything on top of a web-booked ticket costs you money. Luggage, drinks, snacks, in-person check-in, etc. etc. Their marketing has a feisty edge just like their famous CEO, Michael O'Leary, who has said that flying is not some life-altering sexual experience, it's just transportation. They take great pride in the fact that Ryanair is basically the Greyhound of the skies. They pretty much come out and say that they don't really care about you. And, they've been very successful financially. Personally though, I think they just absolutely have no soul. (let alone taste) I too am guilty of just looking for the cheapest plane ticket, but I have no desire to be shipped somewhere like an trussed-up overnight parcel. Don't worry though, passengers standing during take-off & landing will never pass safety concerns, and whether they actually start charging people to use the can or not, all this free publicity just plays right into their hands. They totally love it.
