T-Mobile USA goes live with $50 unlimited voice plans in San Francisco {Engadget Mobile}
Apr 17th 2009 1:34PM I'm really annoyed by all the prejudiced comments about T-Mobile. (Prejudice is making a judgment without considering the facts."My mind is made up, don't confuse me with the facts!")
I have had cell service since 1990, with a variety of carriers, including AT&T, Southwest Bell, Cingular (yes, they were all separate then), Sprint and VoiceStream, that became T-Mobile. I have stayed with T-Mobile since 2002, because the customer service and coverage was better than any other I had ever tried, as was the price.
Many of my friends in the Dallas/Fort Worth area use other carriers, and have far more dropped calls than I do. I have had the regional 3000 minute plan, (TX, OK, AR and LA) since 2002, for $49. Couldn't beat that.... Until I started looking at Boost Mobile's $50 UNLIMITED plan. I seriously considered switching, since I would get free calls anywhere in the US (at least where the iden network was), as well as text and internet. I called T-Mobile customer service to tell them I was considering switching, and they changed my plan to the "Unlimited Loyalty" plan for the same $49 I have been paying since 2002, I now get coverage anywhere in the US, as well as free long distance to anywhere in the US. It doesn't include text or picture messaging, but I was using only $1.20 a month for that, so it didn't make sense to add 400 messages for $5.
I used to have the $5.99 TZones, an was able to use Opera Mini on my RAZR. I was also able to tether my laptop, but at pretty slow, dial-up speeds. In January, I had them remove the $5.99 TZones, and now can't get it back. I was told they now have 3G speeds for $9.99/month, but with a 50 MB limit. Going over that will cost 20 cents/ MB, but with a $15 cap. In order to take advantage of that, however, I need a new 3G capable phone, which MUST be T-Mobile branded due to the WCDMA frequency of 1700MHz. (AT&T phones use 1800MHz WCDMA).
I really like the idea of UNLIMITED EVERYTHING for $50, (and NO TAXES!!!) at Boost, but their phone selection is very limited, (ONLY Motorola iden "NexTel type phones), and their data speeds are so slow as to be unusable for tethering or even surfing on the phone. I went to a Sprint corporate service center store, (Boost is a division of Sprint), where they sell Boost, and neither the manager, sales people or service technicians could get the internet to work on any of the Boost phones they had in the store.
While I was writing this, I received a phone call from T-Mo, to tell me about the "Unlimited Loyalty" plan I had already switched to. I told the rep that I really missed my TZones, and he suggested I try the new 9.99 plan, and gave me a $10 credit to try it out. Now I'm waiting for it to become active on the system.
All in all, in my experience, (including many different carries of my own as well as work phones), I still think T-Mo is the best all-around deal, especially with the "Unlimited Loyalty'!
