Life Nomadic: Building the Ideal Country {Gadling}

Jun 5th 2009 8:19AM I live in and write about Japan so definitely agree about the awesome train system and horrible address system - I guess you can't have it all.

Now I'm off to think about the aspects of different countries that would make my ideal country. Thanks!

Stupid tourists ruin Tokyo fish market for the rest of us {Gadling}

Dec 4th 2008 5:25PM Mike - this really is a shame and you would think that there would be some way to accommodate tourists and travelers who want to visit. Some I know are advocating a designated viewing area.

But you are right, if people are are respectful of the fact that this is a place of business and the livelihood of others this probably wouldn't be an issue.

Big in Japan: 5 tips for eating veggie in Japan {Gadling}

Dec 2nd 2008 2:07PM Great tips Matthew! I have always wanted to try shōjin-ryōri and although I'm not vegetarian I'm a big fan of zaru sob - it's my go to quick snack or light lunch when I'm in Japan.

Big in Japan: Crazy, crazy creatures from old Japan {Gadling}

Oct 3rd 2008 5:14PM Love this Matthew! The legends and fables of Japan are always fun to read about.

By the way, I wanted to wish you a belated welcome home - I missed Big in Japan while you were in Africa.

Big in Japan: 5 Japanese foods you might want to avoid {Gadling}

Jun 19th 2008 8:58PM I haven't tried fugu, natto or horse meat and I will probably continue to give them a pass. However, I have tried chicken sashimi and it wasn't really that bad. But that was after I got over my first thought which was "No way am I going to eat that!"

Common foods from other countries often are considered bizarre by western standards but they are common for a reason, either culturally or historically, and may not suit everyone.

Big in Japan: 5 mistakes made by rookie karaoke singers {Gadling}

Jun 11th 2008 5:46PM Matthew - I don't think I could even get drunk enough to sing in public (my family cringes when I sing Happy Birthday!). I am usually a happy wallflower at Karaoke parties.

Thanks for the tips though,

Big in Japan: Best weekend escapes from Tokyo {Gadling}

Jun 9th 2008 7:50PM Great list Matthew. I loved Kamakura and can't wait to go again. The closest I've been to Mount Fuji is seeing fly by while on the bullet train. It's definitely on my to do list though.

You should also cover Nikko sometime. It's a beautiful mountainous area just north of Tokyo and it's perfect for a weekend getaway. I love the hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil monkeys that are prominently displayed about the area.

Use your own credit card to book your flight or get knocked off {Gadling}

Jun 7th 2008 6:38PM This is news to me! As an expat living in Tokyo we pay for my husband's kids to come see us and it would be impossible for us to 'show our face'.

My guess is that the companies must have been losing a lot if money from fraudulently used credit cards and this is their way of proving that the owner of the credit card actually wanted the fare charged to them.

Thanks for the heads up on this.

Do escalators eat Crocs? {Gadling}

Jun 5th 2008 5:58PM Japan has asked Crocs to alter the design. Apparently these signs are being put up by the Washington Metro subway system (among others) too.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/09/18/national/main3271384.shtml

I don't get the whole Croc thing either and think they are kind of ugly but then I am often in the minority when it comes to the latest in fashion.

Eating your way through Japan - a photo gallery {Gadling}

May 23rd 2008 10:19PM Some of your editorial comments on the food were too funny! You were definitely a brave one though...horse sashimi and beef tongue, how could you?

I guess I'm just not that adventurous although I have eaten chicken sashimi...
