Why cars can cost 3x as much in Australia despite currency parity with the U.S. {Autoblog}

Feb 21st 2011 12:50AM lots of the prices here are 2x to 3x the price (food, clothing....) because minimum wage is much higher in Australia (I think its sitting around $15 per hour and it increased with age)

Feb 21st 2011 12:39AM As an American Expat working in Australia, it is not just cars.

A candy bar will cost about $2 at a grocery store.
Beer is about $50 for a 24 pack (mass produced equivalent to a Bud)
Meat is 2x to 3x the price
Rent in Sydney is listed on a weekly basis as it would sounds crazy to list it monthly

Report: Whitacre suggests GM IPO shares will be $20-$25 {Autoblog}

Oct 14th 2010 4:22PM While I am not saying I would buy GM, you cannot compare prices directly. Look at total shares offered and such.

If Ford has 1,000,000 shares and GM has 100,000 shares then even if GM is valued at $30 a share and Ford at $15 the total value of Ford's shares is still 5 times as much as GM.

One share of GM may not be the same percentage of the company (share of the company) as Ford

Israel hopes to clear air and streets with cash-for-clunkers program {Autoblog Green}

Do HUMMER drivers get more tickets? A new study thinks so... {Autoblog}

Jan 20th 2009 5:35PM Being probably the only actuary on this site... I feel like its my time to chime in.

ISO = Insurance Service Office. These are used for ratings. IE tickets usually mean are more likely to get into a car accident (either by running a stop sign, red light, driving faster than you should when road conditions are not good...)

So this is a proxy to the safety of the driver.

Just like credit score is a proxy for maturity (and safety level) of driver.

But don't worry, we remove correlations in our data. IE if only males owned H2s and H3s, we would not hit someone for being a male and owning an H2.

When you barely look into the data, you can make some pretty general statements.

As with Toyotas. Lets look at their demographic. Family sedans, SUVs for moms, minivan, and some trucks. There is nothing that you would buy for 'fun' driving.

I think this makes sense from first glance. If anyone would like to learn more on insurance pricing:

Is it a Fruit or a Vegetable? {Slashfood}

Dec 4th 2008 7:52PM time for my biology nerdiness to shine:

Fruit = the ovary of a plant when it is edible

vegetable = if you eat any other part of a plant

a strawberry is an aggregate fruit or a multiple fruit, I forget. each little speck on a strawberry was once a separate flower with its own ovary
