Spirit Airlines' fee for carry-on bags might be stupid, but it shouldn't be illegal {Gadling}
Apr 19th 2010 9:32AM Free markets need full information to work properly. I worry we're getting to a point where it will become impossible to fully compare prices because each airline will have its own complex bundle of fees with the only real purpose of confusing customers enough to trick them into paying more.
But the best solution is for the DOT to regulate how fares are presented instead of regulating what services an airline must provide. A fare search that has a Spirit result should include "+$45 carry-on baggage fee" right next to it. Without any clicks you should know to the penny how much you will be paying that airline for all fares, taxes, and fees.
But I also think fees that are unavoidable are fundamentally unfair. Who travels without bringing anything with them? If you can't avoid a fee it should be included in the base rate. Competing on fee trickery and not price or service quality is not a free market principle.

Five (Semi)-Big Snubs & Other 2009 Oscar Facts {Cinematical}
Feb 2nd 2010 1:44PM The Secret of Kells will get a proper release in the US in early March. You have to think this nomination is a financial gold mine for them. It's got a beautiful and distinctive style but the story is sort of muddled.
It's funny, major studios put random movies into theaters for a week to qualify them for the Animated Feature category in order to expand the nomination slate from three to five (which is what happens when 16 films qualify). Disney even put a direct to DVD Tinkerbell movie in theaters for this reason.
But the big beneficiary wasn't Ice Age 3, A Christmas Carol, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, or Ponyo but a tiny Irish film (and probably Coraline).

Jan 6th 2010 9:08AM I admit I clicked through on this due to the muppet photo. But what's the connection between the photo and the article? Is there an awesome muppets allusion I'm missing???
jennybee: it may have to do with differing 3D technologies and the different theaters. For some the glasses are a couple bucks a pop and the theaters reuse them. For others, the glasses are a few cents so the theater doesn't necessarily go out of its way to collect them

Dec 15th 2009 9:57AM Two things for me:
1- As you note later on, A Serious Man was put in the comedy category so it was not snubbed in the drama category. Although maybe it's a worse sign to be in a weaker category and still not get nominated
2- Eastwood gets a director nomination but Invictus didn't get a picture nomination. I know this happens at the Oscars but it seems more unlikely here where there are 10 best picture nominees

Sep 3rd 2009 9:34AM Cool feature idea. I remember the romance part to be really well-done while the disaster part was hokey and clumsy. Maybe sitting down to watch it again is in order.
'Hancock' Will Fly Again in a Sequel {Cinematical}
Aug 25th 2009 10:43AM It depends on what version of Hitchcock they go with in the sequel. The very clever, interesting, fun spirit from the first 2/3 of the film? Or the ridiculous, half-assed, nonsensical last third that completely destroyed the original?
