Vanishing America: The Drive-In Theater {Gadling}
Jun 4th 2012 8:30AM Families loved drive-in movies for a number of reasons. 1) kids could be in pajamas and go to sleep during the second feature. 2) Usually less expensive.
Remember $1 per car night ? 3) No need to dress up. 4) You could bring
your picnic basket or cooler and enjoy food from home. 5) Smoking was no
problem. As the late sixites and early seventies arrived so did more adult
films. Families were shut out of those attractions. Most drive-ins were not
first-run and could double up some fun older films on the cheap. As video became popular the older films were no longer available to the drive-ins. Then the
window between first-run and video became very short. I believe drive-ins
could still make it profitably if the old films were available to them. A movie
is still new if you haven't seen it. A Ma and Pa Kettle film and a Joel McCrea
western double feature would still get my family to the drive-in on a Saturday night. As for daylight savings time.....drive-ins always had that and it didn't seem
to slow them down much. Oh, I remember seeing PSYCHO in a drive-in on
a rainy night all by myself. Scared the ---- out of me.
Rough Cuts: Give Doris Day an Oscar, Already {Moviefone Blog}
Jun 5th 2010 8:12AM Frank Sinatra said she was the greatest female ballad singer. If you want to see a great comedic female at the top of her form watch the first ten minutes of PLEASE ON'T EAT THE DAISIES. Doris Day has always been my favorite screen and recording artist. Mmmmmmmmm.
'Vulgar' Betty White Kills on 'SNL' Hosting Debut {PopEater}
May 9th 2010 1:35AM I enjoyed Betty's monologue. I hadn't seen SNL in over fifteen years. It was dumb then. It still is. Betty should have skipped this gig. I went to the kitchen and made a sandwich (with the sound off) during the so-called musical segment.
Earlier in the evening I watched a DVD of THE PHILADELPHIA STORY with Hepburn, Grant and Stewart. That was REAL entertainment.
Cover Songs Uncovered: These Actually Weren't the Original Versions {Spinner}
Mar 6th 2010 11:17PM I don't understand this "covers" business. Sometimes reviewers will write in disgust because someone has recorded a "cover". Or this article.
There was a time when twenty or more artists would record a song. If you didn't like Andy Williams' version of "Moon River" you might like Henry Mancini's or any one of many, many artists who recorded it. The more versions recorded the more popular the song was.
Granted sometimes an artist "owned" a song in that his version was so pupular it was only done by others in albums. "ALL THE WAY", "TAMMY", "SECRET LOVE", for instance. "Cover" seems to be another word for "stolan" by some writers. I am glad for the choice, frankly. I never appreciated The Beatles music until I heard it perfomed by The Boston Pops Orchestra. "Norwegian Wood" by the Pops can produce goose bumps. So there.
Kathryn Grayson, Star of Classic Musicals, Is Dead {PopEater}
Feb 18th 2010 4:50PM Lovely lady. She handed me an autographed picture of herself on one of my MGM visits. She hastily took it back and said that it was a printed autograph, got a pen from someone and signed it. My favorite KG musical is LOVELY TO LOOK AT. When she sings "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" I always choke up. RIP.
Phone Troubles Ruin Segment on 'Live With Regis and Kelly' (VIDEO) {Inside TV Blog}
Jan 30th 2010 4:35PM And they did call her back the next day.
PopEater Fans Want Anderson Cooper to Replace Regis on 'Live!' {PopEater}
Jan 30th 2010 8:42AM I watch the show almost every morning. Anderson or Mark would be fine as replacements. Most of the other guest hosts made little or no impression. Anderson and Mark seem "at home" on the show and Rippa seems to fit with them best.
Samantha Harris Quits 'Dancing with the Stars' {PopEater}
Jan 29th 2010 2:00AM Samantha was a good fit with Tom. I shall miss her. Always enjoyed the nonsense interviews backstage. They were much like
those interviews in sports locker rooms. Stupid but fun.
Five ways to improve Dancing with the Stars {AOL TV}
Jan 13th 2010 11:11AM My only problem is the guest singers on the results shows. This is a ballroom show. So why not have some singers that actually sing ballroom type music. So many of the youngsters swallow the mikes as they perform and the lyrics are totally unintelligible. I realize the guests are chosen for the audience the show hopes to attract so my interests are not going to be realized. It also would be nice if the voting procedure can be changed to somehow give the best dancers the win. Osmond, for instance, is fun and talented but surely not the best dancer last season. That has been the case in other seasons as well.
Cat Called to Jury Duty {Pawnation OLD}
Jan 12th 2010 7:10PM I would never make a fuss. I would just show up and see what happens. Fun.
