Travel Fashion No-No's {AOL Travel News}

Jun 23rd 2010 3:02PM I travel extensively, and Samantha knows of what she speaks. I believe it is very wise to respect the local customs and traditions when visiting countries outside the U.S.- especially in the Middle East and Asia. I do not wear my wedding ring with the diamonds, I do not wear sneakers, very seldom wear jeans, and her advice to carry a scarf is right on. It's fun to buy a scarf at the local souk-they're gorgeous and inexpensive. I promise, you'll still stand out as an American-it's impossible not to. But showing respect and an interest in learning local lore and customs garners respect and better treatment as a foreigner in a strange land. A smile is worth a thousand words when you are attempting to understand the local language as well! I have had so many Chinese (and others of Asian descent) apologize for their broken English when trying to communicate. I thank them for their effort and remind them my Mandarin is no where near as good as their English. Get out and see the world!

Dec 15th 2008 12:54PM Actually, I thought they did have customs & immigration at ONT. UPS has several int'l flights in and out. Maybe they're not available for the pax side...?
