Jul 13th 2006 11:19PM I couldn't agree more. I think people have this quixotic idea that a travel writer traverses the world (first-class, mind you) on somebody else's dime and then gets to wax poetic about it. As if. True, we are afforded many life-altering and fabulous experiences. But that experience is often the final reward. Indeed a reward it is, but, alas, like anything, it comes with a price.

Jun 15th 2006 3:17PM I was one of those poor slobs with an absurdly long layover enroute to Sudan in 2003. In an obsure part of a terminal under renovation, I found a bench and promptly passed out only to be rustled awake by British police asking to see my passport. (Did I look Muslim?) If only Yotel were around then!

Jun 6th 2006 5:21PM Right on. Cheesy. Yes. But the pier still retains some authenticy--- $8 sunglasses, anglers casting off the pier and sticky-sweet cotton candy. My daughter was born in L.A. and the pier is a must-see on each return visit.
