Del Monte Cultivating Vending Machines? {Slashfood}

Feb 18th 2010 5:48PM Totally agree with the previous commenter ... don't think fruits and vegetables should be called fresh if they are "specially packaged" and come from a vending machine!

But I'm skeptical about Del Monte's "healthy" products, though, since their new so-called Fruit Naturals are loaded with extra sugar or Splenda ... yes, eating most any fruit is better than snarfing down a candy bar, but I'm not sure Fruit Naturals should be considered a "healthy" snack.

They don't even list the ingredients on their website (http://www.delmonte.com/Products/FruitsList.asp), which makes it tough to determine how much of the 13+g of sugar is natural or from the fruit vs. how much is added sugar. Lame!

Sustainable Sushi Restaurants {Slashfood}

Dec 7th 2009 6:05PM Anyone know of any similarly sustainable sushi restaurants in the Bay Area?

Bicyclists Fight for Right to Drive-Thru {Slashfood}

Dec 7th 2009 5:23PM Where I live, many fast-food restaurants close their doors around 10 or 11 p.m. but the drive-thru remains open for a few more hours.

I always cheer when a company allows common sense to trump a rule or policy that was set in place years ago. In this case, and especially given the popularity of biking in PDX, the policy needed to evolve. Yeah, Burgerville! I grew up in Oregon and miss you. :)

Oktoberfest in Munich 2008: Gadling readers chime in with some tips {Gadling}

Jul 10th 2009 4:32PM Don't forget to eat! You will have so much fun drinking and walking around, but you need to eat and get something besides beer in your belly. Do yourself a favor and built a strong foundation of steckerl fish and that delicious chicken.

Bravo Alaska Airlines - bag not on the belt in 25 minutes? $25 off your next flight! {Gadling}

Apr 29th 2009 7:30PM As a regular Alaska passenger, I'm curious to see how this actually works. This program may sound good on paper and in a press release, but given "Effective July 7th, if your baggage is not at the baggage claim within 25 minutes of your plane parking at the gate ...":

1. Will Alaska be starting a clock or otherwise measuring exactly when each individual plane parks, then marking precisely when the first bag off that flight pops out at baggage claim? Will that clock or timing be otherwise verified and/or available to customers?
2. Does "at baggage claim" mean bags off the plane but still behind the wall with the handlers, or bags actually on the conveyor belt for customers to pick up?
3. What if half a flight's bags arrive at baggage claim at 24 minutes after parking, and the other half at 26 minutes? How will Alaska tell what bags/customers get the certificate or miles?

Related to Debbie's comment, I also don't like that consumers have to track down a "Alaska or Horizon Customer Service Agent and let them know."

4. Does this mean if your bag takes longer than 25 minutes -- and you're therefore delayed -- you then have to waste even more time by standing in line to claim your certificate or bonus miles toward a future Alaska flight? I sincerely doubt customers in a hurry will take the time to do that.

Now if they have a customer service agent standing at the ready by each baggage carousel, who is marking the time and ready to hand out either certificates or take down mileage plan numbers, then ye gods, I'd stand corrected and be beside myself with joy.

But if not, it just means that we'll look at Southwest the next time we need to fly and check a bag, instead of automatically going with Alaska.

Sears Tower to be renamed "Willis Tower" {Gadling}

Mar 16th 2009 2:31PM This reminds me of living in Denver, when the famous Mile High Stadium was torn down and a newer one rebuilt as "Invesco Field at Mile High."

The marketing rights to a taxpayer-funded stadium were essentially sold without hearing out the 75% of metropolitan citizens who opposed the Invesco name. To make matters worse, the majority of the $120 million spent by Invesco did not go toward the stadium's construction costs, but to the already-wealthy Broncos organization.

Denver generally hated this ridiculously corporate title, as we were emotionally and understandably attached to Mile High. For several years even the Denver Post flat-out refused to call the field anything but "Mile High" in their articles.

Perhaps some people have come around to "Invesco Field," but the stadium remains simply "Mile High" to me and many others. I assume most in Chicago will similarly keep "Sears Tower" in their hearts and minds.

Daily deal - Toshiba 250GB portable hard drive for $65 {Gadling}

Mar 11th 2009 2:30PM Hard drives are excellent for backing up photos, videos, travel documents, etc. while traveling.

Be careful, though ... when pulled aside for extra screening, I've almost had my hard drive confiscated twice at high-security airports. It's very helpful to know a few words like "electronic storage" or "for computer" in the local language.

What do backpackers do in Venice? Check it out {Gadling}

Mar 4th 2009 5:56PM Gordon is right.

There are plenty of ways to amuse yourself while traveling without destroying other people's property. Why, as a guest in a foreign place, would you trash someone's things?

This is not "a creative way to get wet." Rather, this is a bunch of jackasses ruining it for other Americans who want to see and respect the countries to which they travel.

Last year's video was funny. Why did you even post this one and give these tools an audience?

Denver International Airport censors access on its free Wi-Fi network {Gadling}

Mar 9th 2008 8:31PM Really a ridiculous stance taken by DIA ... and I strongly second Cully's comments about BoingBoing.

The biggest plane ever built {Gadling}

Feb 18th 2008 10:04PM I second Rob's comment ... if in Oregon, check out the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum in McMinnville. You'll hardly believe this massive wooden beast ever got off the ground. I was dragged there by my pilot boyfriend and father, but ended up really enjoying the museum. I'd also recommend sampling the beer at McMinnville's Hotel Oregon afterwards!
