Beware of the 'grandparents scam' {WalletPop}

Jul 28th 2008 10:55AM for one thing, I think the first 2 posts were by real jerks who I hope don't have kids. If your grandkid called from canada for robbing a bank, rape or murder, I can see letting him rot but not for soemthing innocent like a fishing license. My own Dad is not much better, I called him some years ago, when I was 20, my friend and I had gone to Nantucket to visit some friends there. Unfortunately the friends got mixed up about when the ferry was dropping us off and they weren't waiting for us. Their cell didn't work on the island and we didn't know the address of the house and we'd come in on the last ferry so we were stranded. I called my dad for help, heck maybe a moneygram or something for a hotel for the night? He told me to deal with it myself and let this be a lesson to me. It's illegal to sleep on the beach or a public bench, etc in nantucket because they only want rich people going there so my friend and I wound up in jail for the night but because we were girls and stranded the cops took pity on us and let us go the next morning without bail or charges. I didn't speak to my dad for 2 years, who would leave their blonde, pretty 20 year old daughter stranded on a tourist island without help? Anything could have happened. Natalie Holloway anyone? (that hadn't happened yet though). My daughter is 5 and I'm so overprotective! I'd never leave her there to deal with it herself! Perhaps I value my daughter more, who knows... I can see how grandparents could get taken in by this. It's a shame but none of my own would have...

Luv Coach Q&A: Love and Honesty {Blackvoices Main}

Jun 13th 2008 9:53AM Well MY husband doesn't have any female friends and I don't think that's something wives should have to get used to. I KNOW he has no female friends, we have very clear boundaries in our marraige and both of us understand what is and is not acceptable. My husband doesn't even have a cell phone (I do but he doesn't like them) and we share our email address, He does not go out drinking or anything like that, whoever checks the mail reads each others mail if we feel like it, it's not that we don't trust each other, we do, there just isn't any reason for such secrecies. We just have nothing to hide from each other so it's not an issue if I go through his wallet looking for our credit card. I mean I'm not a total IDIOT or anything just because I trust him doesn't mean I'm STUPID, I'm well aware that I may find something in there one day that I don't like but the relationship we have keeps me quite at ease. Likewise I don't have any male friends, don't want or need any, I have him and he is all I need, he is my best friend, and so far in 7 years I have not felt like I could not talk to him. Once or twice I have called one of his friends, with a good reason, his friend is an artist and I wanted to have him paint a picture of our daughter and my husband for his birthday. I did have a boyfriend who did those things once, he used to steal my friends phone numbers when I wasn't looking. I knew because he would come and repeat something I had said to just that girl, it happened a few times. Then some of my girlfriends started telling me to tell him to leave them alone! Needless to say, he was a fun guy but not worth the trouble, he didn't last very long.

Kicking Daddy out of bed {ParentDish}

Jun 11th 2008 2:10PM I have been been against co-sleeping and separate bedrooms for my husband and I since my 4 year olds birth. Biggest issue with co-sleeping? In many cases it never ends! My sis-in-law's whole family sleeps in one big king sized bed, her 2 girls are 4 and 8! My own mother has issues too, when I was 11, my 5 y old brother died tragically so when I was 17 and she had a surprise baby, she did the co-sleeping thing out of fear that he would stop breathing in his sleep. Now he's almost 11... and still sleeps with his mother. As a child I never slept with my parents, it wasn't even an issue. I think I crept into their bed after a nightmare once and that was it. At what point do the kids go to sleep in their own room? How will these kids go to college without mommy and daddy to sleep with them? At what point do we teach our kids independence? The next generation is going to be so co-dependent it won't even be funny. How do mom & dad get private time? In my marraige that private time is essential. Many couples don't feel the need to "get together" more than a few times a year but my husband and I like to do it a few times a week and we like to do it alone, in the comfort of our own bed. So Co-sleeping just doesn't work for us. There are other reasons also, my husband asks now and then if my 4 year old can sleep with us and my answer is always no! For one, I have severe insomnia. I require lots of space in my king sized bed, silence and total darkness. My daughter seems to always end up with her feet poking me somewhere unpleasant. In the best of conditions I only get a few hours sleep so I refuse to make it worse by adding to my problems. I think the one or two times I relented, she woke up after a few hours and asked to go back to her own room. (An independent sleeper!, A mini-wave in celebration of my parenting methods!) As far as separate bedrooms for my husband and myself I would never want that and I don't think my husband would either. I want a bed big enough to sleep in without his elbow in my back, I'm cool with sending him a postcard from my side of the bed but I still want him THERE! There are little things that bother each of us about the others sleep habits, mostly that bother him, poor guy, I get up and down a lot at night, toss and turn and lately he's said that I've been snoring, (how embarrassing) but we tolerate each other well in our bedroom and we like sleeping together, any cons to the situation are worth it. We don't even have a TV in the bedroom, it is a place for him and me, not for us to ignore each other and watch tv. Every one has to do what works for their family, but I could never do the co-sleeping thing, or sleep apart from my husband.

How Many Calories ... in New York Cheesecake? {That's Fit}

Apr 11th 2008 9:51PM It is impossible to have dessert anymore, actually for me, it's impossible to have anything anymore. The sugar and carbs they put in everything nowadays makes it so you can't have much of anything. Everyone loses and gains weight differently, my husband loses 10 lbs just by thinking about going on a diet. Me, 4 years after baby, still am 30 lbs heavier than my goal weight of 120. I have learned that if I have no breakfast, a light lunch and a small dinner every night, I will gain 5 lbs a month. After trying so many different diets, I have learned that the only way for me to actually lose any weight is the special k diet. Cereal for breakfast, lowfat yogurt for lunch and a small salad with a half a grilled chicken cutlet for dinner and finally the lbs are slowly coming off. Everyone tells me about how I'm not supposed to do that, I'm supposed to cut portions or my body won't lose weight, but it just doesn't happen for me. Maybe one day I'll lose it all and will be able to consider eating a sandwich once a week and maybe even pasta once a month, who knows? But the crap they put in food now is just terrible, has anyone noticed how much sugars and carbs and calories are in just plain apple or orange juice? It's no wonder the country is overweight, you can't have anything anymore. For those who complain about all the fat people around, I agree it's not pleasant to look at but it is true that some people really do try, but some people lose weight easily and for others it's very hard. I'm not even significantly overweight, just enough to wound my vanity and I find that for my body it's unbelievably hard. It is nice to have cheesecake sometimes, but jeez, that's over a days calories and a month worth of sugar for me.

Circuit City Botches GPS Install, $12k in Damages, Won't Pay Up {Switched}

Apr 1st 2008 9:57AM This is why I don't believe in putting anything aftermarket on my car. They say it can be done properly but I don't believe it. If it doesn't come from the manufacturer then it doesn't belong on your car. My husband is a wholesaler and the minute we get a car in with one of those remote starters he rips it right out, they cause more trouble than anything. My cousin put in a stereo into her acura and a few days later she heard her alarm going off and went out to look and the car was on fire in the driveway. Everyone I know laughs at me because I didn't put some expensive stereo in my 2007 Camry but you know what? The stereo that's in there works fine and looks like it belongs there and unlike everyone else my car isn't all gaffed up and I have no problems with my electrical system. Not to mention that when I upgrade to a new car I'll get a better price for this one because it's not all screwed up...

Shoplifter forgets son! {ParentDish}

Mar 21st 2008 3:23PM This is a disgusting thing to do, but you know what? I'm more disgusted by yet another Gay person making ignorant comments. We can't ALL be gay!!! Why do so many Gay people insist on acting like there's something wrong with str8 people? I hate to say this but even though I have no problem with people being gay... It's not natural... being str8 is natural... PERIOD!!! Do what you want but don't go looking down your nose at people who manage to have sex the way sex is meant to be had. I have heard so many ignorant comments from gay people. Recently I was at a child's birthday party and met a gay mother who had her daughter through artificial insemination who called me a BREEDER in front of everyone! The hostess threw her and her kid out! Is she going to raise her kid to think that being str8 is bad? Abandoning his son was terrible but since he was stealing food, maybe they really needed it. I'd rather hear of people teaching their kid to steal food they really needed than hear of people teaching their kids that being str8 is bad. I hope you don't have kids Andy.

'Sexy' a four-letter word for Victoria's Secret chief {BloggingStocks}

Feb 28th 2008 9:52PM I have no problem with Victoria's Secret's "Sexy" new image but has anyone noticed that they carry very little in the way of actual "lingerie in the stores now? You have to buy it from the catalog and to be honest it's not easy to buy lingerie that way, you kind of need to have it in front of you or to be able to try it on. I'm 27 and my mother's Victoria's Secret had tons of lingerie but now it's panties, bras and flashy cotton pajamas. Even when I was 20 or 21 I could go in there and find lots of nice things but not anymore. They hardly even have any more Chemise nightgowns or silk robes. Apparently the days are gone when you could go there and pick out something to surprise your husband with on the spur of the moment. They have a few things but the selection is very limited. They can get as sexy as they like there, it doesn't bother me so long as they don't get trashy like Fredericks of Hollywood but I wish they'd carry more in the way of teddy's, nighties and such. They've lost a lot of my business just because of my distaste for buying lingerie from a catalog.

Would you sterilize your teenage daughter? {ParentDish}

Feb 22nd 2008 7:15PM lizsphoto: when were you a teenager? It couldn't have been any more recently than the 50's. Everyone was going crazy sleeping around in the 60's and 70's and from the 80's on up sex has been a very casual thing. You need to get with the times, I don't agree with the way things are now, but I also don't sit around mulling around how it used to be back when the dinosaurs were young. That's not how it is now and that's that. I didn't wait until I was married to have sex but I wasn't a tramp either. I don't regret anything I've done, I've had some pleasant experiences and some meaningful relationships, as well as a few unpleasant ones which I believe have made me all the more appreciative of the one I have now with my husband. I didn't have my first child until I was 23 and married. That little girl is almost 5 now and thinking of her while I read about all these people thinking of sterilizing young girls just horrifies me. No way would I do that to my daughter or my 16 year old sister, regardless of how much I may worry about them. I would rather have some responsible heart to heart talks with them about not just giving it up to some punk as a girl but waiting until they are women and are ready to do it with a nice young man who makes them feel special and pretty. It isn't realistic to think young girls are going to wait for marraige and I'm not sure I would want that for my daughter anyway, I would want her to have some responsible and special experiences as a woman first and know what she wants in a man before jumping into marraige. I would never just force her to be sterilized and take the cowardly way out. I would rather try to help my daughter prepare herself in a more reasonable and less drastic manner. Sounds like the ideas of an incredibly hysterical and irrational group of people.

Disorder in the Skies: Baggage Mangler {AOL Video Blog}

Feb 10th 2008 7:45PM This is nothing, he's not even throwing them hard, just tossing them. Do you have any clue how many bags he handles a day? Stuff should be properly packed, handlers cannot go treating every single package like it contains the crown jewels. I work for the postal service and I throw fragile, insured packages harder than that, not out of carelessness but just going about my job, and not wasting any time delicately handling stuff that should be packaged properly. If it breaks and it wasn't insured or properly packaged, that's your problem.

Girl Scout robbed of cookie money {ParentDish}

Jan 17th 2008 11:49AM My niece sells GS cookies every year, or I should say my sister in law does it. She sells the cookies to family members, family friends and the people she goes to work with. She does this with all the fund raisers and I even help by taking orders from the people I know and work with to help out. I guess she thinks she is keeping my niece safe by doing this but I have to say she isn't getting the experience from the fundraising that is intended. If you ask the girl how many boxes she sold she'll tell you she doesn't know, her mom sells them.I think that is going a little over board but i wouldn't let my kids go door to door either. And by the way, apparently policy varies by region I suppose because we do collect money upon placing an order. If we don't present the money upon ordering we don't get the cookies.
