Just When You Thought It Was Safe to Exploit Horses for Money... {Cinematical}
Mar 4th 2009 9:30PM Thank you for publicizing the excellent documentary "Blinders," which is nominated for a Genesis award. The film by Donny Moss will have another screening in Manhattan on March 20 at Village East Cinema as part of the New York Film and Video Festival. It's also being broadcast on the Documentary Channel. For more screening information visit www.blindersthemovie.com
We local residents see the plight of the horses every day in New York City, but others may not be aware of the realities of this inhumane industry. "Blinders" offers an opportunity to get a real look at how things are--and for some people, it will be an eye opener. The Humane Society of the United States and the ASPCA support a full ban on the carriage industry in New York City, and Council Member Tony Avella has introduced landmark legislation to make it happen.
Non-New York City residents, please drop a letter in the mail to City Hall. Take a few minutes to let Mayor Bloomberg know that you are appalled by this kind of exploitation of horses for cash and won't be visiting until this outdated and inhumane industry is a thing of the past.

Vienna horse carriage driver charged for being drunk {Gadling}
Jan 4th 2009 8:53AM Horse-drawn carriages have no place on the streets of a busy city. As we have seen with recent accidents in Vienna, Berlin, St. Augustine, and Greenville, SC, horses spook easily and the consequences are generally severe, with often-deadly injuries to the horses and tremendous risk to humans. In Berlin, the driver was run over by the carriage and seriously injured. In New York City, where Smoothie spooked and died in September 2007, the horses stay out in inclement weather, in violation of the law; the drivers make illegal U-turns on busy streets; the horses are inadequately watered and have infrequent veterinary care; and meaningful regulation is not possible, by the ASPCA's own admission. The time for a ban on horse-drawn carriages is long overdue in New York City, and in any busy 21st-century city where horses must be on streets with automobiles, buses, and emergency vehicles.

Makeover needed: McDonald's {BloggingStocks}
Oct 23rd 2008 10:10AM McDonald's is disgusting, and Americans would do well to avoid it. Yes, it's cheap. I won't even go in a McDonald's for a cup of water, though. I'd rather die than support factory farming. Truly.
Horse-Drawn Carriages in NYC {Animal Hubbub}
Dec 21st 2007 10:49PM It's wonderful to see that the carriage horse owners association has hired a PR guru (aka "flack") to spiff up the industry's image! It's good to know you guys care!
I guess they need a public wizard, because these horses are badly mistreated. It's kind of funny the way the industry tries to minimize our efforts as the misguided work of jobless "animal rights" nuts. Anything to distract people from an important issue, I guess. Let's hope they don't resort to bribery, in the next week or two anyway.
