Think twice before using palm oil {Slashfood}
May 26th 2008 11:29PM The palm oil industry is directly responsible for the genocide of orangutans. These innocent, peaceful creatures are being slaughtered as virgin rainforest is burned down and replaced by palm oil plantations. Adults are immediately killed while babies are taken to be sold in the illegal pet trade. A few of the lucky ones are confiscated and brought to centers such as Nyaru Menteng, which is operated by the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation. The center is home to nearly 700 orangutans-- most of them under 5 years old. They need your help! To learn more about how you can protect orangutans, please visit the Orangutan Outreach website at redapes.org.

Science magazine declares ethanol worse for the Earth than fossil fuels {Autoblog}
Feb 22nd 2008 1:14AM The comment is not spam. It's totally on topic. Did you even read it?
Palm oil is being touted in the media as a green alternative fuel source which has the potential to eventually replace gasoline. A barrel of palm oil already trades for more money than crude-- and it's production is disastrous for the environment. It's literally killing the earth. Maybe you should take a trip to Borneo and look around. The old growth rainforest is being turned into Hell.
Don't lose the forest for the trees....

Feb 21st 2008 11:20PM Palm oil is evil. The forests of Borneo and Sumatra are being destroyed and massive oil palm plantations are being planted in their place... The environment is being destroyed from all the carbon being released into the air...
Palm oil corporations are responsible for the slaughter of 1000s of innocent orangutans... the most peaceful creatures on the planet.
People need to act more humane...

Seven reasons I watch Animal Planet {AOL TV}
Feb 7th 2008 5:11PM Thank you so much for your kind words about 'Orangutan Island'. I'm glad you like it so much. You will be pleased to know that the show has been signed for a second season! :-)
I'd just like to address a few points so your readers might better understand the story behind the orangutans on the island. Nearly every one of them came to the Nyaru Menteng Rehabiltation Center as a baby after his or her mother had been brutally killed on a palm oil plantation. Most babies aren't so lucky. They end up as illegal pets or die in transit. A baby orangutan, like a human baby, needs a mother. These babies were fortunate enough to be confiscated from poachers, traders and plantation workers and brought to the Center where they received a tremendous amount of love and attention from their human caregivers. They were given names upon their arrival. With over 650 orangutans at the Center, naming them is obligatory. It is the only way to distinguish them. As they grow up, they learn to respond to their names, much like any other domesticated mammal. So just to clarify, they weren't given arbitrary names by the show's producers in order to create a cute storyline. Daisy is Daisy and Chen Chen is Chen Chen-- even when the cameras are turned off. Unlike the meerkats (where there were in fact many 'Flowers') each orangutan is a totally unique individual. They don't sub in for one another. The extent of the reality of the show is that when Oyoy died in episode 3, he really died. Lone and her staff had raised him from his infancy, and his death was a tragic loss. Here are some pictures of him when he was a baby: http://redapes.org/orangutan-island/tribute-to-oyoy/
Anyway, sorry for being so wordy! I would love for you and your readers to visit the Orangutan Outreach website to learn more about orangutans-- and maybe even adopt an orphan! :-)
Enjoy the final episodes of the season... and stick around for season 2....
Best, Rich

Happy birthday to the world's oldest orangutan and gorilla {Gadling}
Dec 6th 2007 11:38PM It's really good to see other folks out there giving a shout out to big Charly. He really is an amazing orangutan-- and the people of Frankfurt are lucky to have him! Let's hope he stays healthy!
I am the Director of a non-profit organization called Orangutan Outreach. We're based in New York and are trying to raise public awareness of the plight of orangutans in the wild. The situation facing them is really bleak. The rainforests in Borneo and Sumatra are being destroyed and replaced by palm oil plantations so quickly that entire species are being wiped out. Orangutans are being pushed to the brink. Adults are routinely butchered, beaten, set on fire and often eaten..... and babies are captured alive (if possible) and sold as illegal pets on the black market. The situation is truly horrific....
Orangutan Outreach raises funds for the Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Rehabilitation Center in Borneo, which is responsible for the care of more than 600 orphaned orangutans-- the youngest being only a few weeks old. They are orphans because of palm oil-- a substance that is being marketed as a 'great new eco-friendly energy source'......
You can see some of our orangutans on Animal Planet's amazing new series 'Orangutan Island' which airs Friday nights at 8:30 e/p across North America. If you haven't seen it yet, definitely check it out! And please visit our website and adopt an orangutan for Christmas!
Thanks again for giving Charly his 15 minutes!
