Opinion: Right to Die Billboard Sends the Wrong Message {ParentDish}

Jul 16th 2010 4:44PM If the author wanted to quote the website they should have included the quote intact instead of picking and choosing. Under the heading "Our Guiding Principles", the quote reads (emphasis is mine) : "MENTALLY COMPETENT ADULTS have a basic human right to end their lives when they suffer from a FATAL OR IRREVERSIBLE ILLNESS OR INTRACTABLE PAIN, when their quality of life is personally unacceptable, and the future holds only hopelessness and misery. Such a right shall be an individual choice, including the timing and companion, free of any restrictions by the law, clergy, medical profession, even friends and relatives no matter how well-intentioned. WE DO NOT ENCOURAGE ANYONE TO END THEIR LIFE, do not provide the means to do so, and do not actively assist in a person’s death. We do, however, support any member who requests it when MEDICAL CIRCUMSTANCES warrant their decision."

UN Accuses Massachusetts Special Education School of Torture {ParentDish}

Jul 3rd 2010 2:42AM If a parent was doing this to their own child at home, the parent would be jailed and their explanation that such a practice was the most humane thing they could do for the child would be met with scorn and ridicule.

Cute Commercial Alert: A Dog with a Bone {Inside TV Blog}

Jan 31st 2010 1:19AM I've seen this commercial several times and agree it's adorable (one of my favorite "dog" commercials), but there is another that's at least as cute (if not moreso). It's for some investment firm and features two dogs: while a romantic French song plays, one dog lays in the house while the other runs all over town bringing things to the first dog--everything from a pilfered soccer ball to a slipper--but the first dog isn't interested in any of it. At last he digs up his bone from his yard and brings it to her. If you haven't seen it, it's worth the time to do a search on YouTube...

Haiti and the Pat Robertson Paradox {Politics Daily}

Jan 22nd 2010 12:16PM What makes me angry isn't Pat's belief in the devil--freedom of religion gives him that right--but that when he spouts this type of garbage people think he speaks for all of Christianity. I'm a practicing Christian (still 'praticing' because I'm not yet perfect like so many others think they are) and I resent his portraying my God in this way. I don't believe God bulldozed Haiti: shifting tectonic plates did that. Where I think God comes into it is how we respond in times of crisis to the suffering of our fellow creations, be they Christian or otherwise. Robertson has a right to say and believe what he wants just as everyone else on this comment board has a right to have and express their opinions, but I would hope that those who disagree with him would know that he does not speak for ALL Christians any more than I do.

Haiti and the Pat Robertson Paradox {Politics Daily}

Jan 22nd 2010 11:49AM You're right--they should have been willing to get their hands dirty. Don't know the exact verse but isn't there one about "by their works you shall know them"? And yes, it is possible to pray and haul debris at the same time. We've seen it enough times watching people being dug out of the rubble not only there but wherever such things occur, whether it be caused by earthquake, hurricane, or bombings...

Haiti and the Pat Robertson Paradox {Politics Daily}

Jan 22nd 2010 11:42AM Soo...the Hatians made a pact with a type of cloth?

Haiti and the Pat Robertson Paradox {Politics Daily}

Jan 22nd 2010 11:33AM So Pat Robertson's god loves his creations so much that he waits 2+ centuries to punish them for their ancestors wanting to free themselves from slavery? Doesn't that mean that the US is far overdue for a nation-wide biblically-proportioned tragedy because our long-dead predecessors fought to free themselves from "English tyranny"? Besides, if Pat truly believes that the earthquake was divine retribution he shouldn't be soliciting donations to help rescue the victims--that would be contrary to his god's wishes, wouldn't it?

California Parents Protest Harvey Milk Day {ParentDish}

Oct 24th 2009 11:02AM According to Wikipedia: "Casimir Pulaski Day is a holiday observed in Illinois on the first Monday of every March to commemorate Casimir Pulaski (March 4, 1745[1] – October 11, 1779), a Revolutionary War cavalry officer born in Poland as Kazimierz Pułaski. He is known for his contributions to the U.S. military in the American Revolution by training its soldiers and cavalry."

As far as Harvey Milk goes, I saw nothing in the article saying they'd be teaching what sexual positions he preferred or that the focus would be on his sexuality. It said: "celebrations and education about Milk's life ... would include children learning about Milk's role in civil rights as well as politics." We have holidays celebrating Columbus, who enslaved and killed other people, Thanksgiving "education" that ignores the way the natives were treated by the settlers, and Washington/Jefferson who OWNED fellow human beings. Seems like an occasional holiday to honor someone who worked for the rights of others provides a little balance.

Serena Williams: Powerful, Nude and Possibly Banned from Australian Open {BV on Sports}

Oct 22nd 2009 2:20PM I didn't view Serena's outburst as her "acting black"--I saw her tirade as her acting like a bullying, overpaid jock who wasn't getting her way in things, no different than baseball or football players who get in the official's faces or start a brawl when the call doesn't go their way. And if the author wanted to quote her in the article he should have included the WHOLE quote instead of cleaning it up: Part of what she said was "I'm gonna take this f***ing ball and shove it down your f***ing throat." At the time she was saying it she was stalking toward the judge shaking her racquet in the woman's face. In the judge's place I would have interpretted the words and actions of Williams as a genuine threat, not as a "cultural" variation in "handling disputes".
