Workplace Discrimination: Beauty Can be a Beast at Work {AOL Jobs}
Aug 12th 2010 5:48AM It says when considering important qualities in hiring a person, that 'appearance' was ranked third, but I imagine what most of those hiring managers were thinking of was that the person arrived well-dressed and presentable, not sexually alluring. From some interview stories I've heard, people don't always think looking your best at an interview is necessary.
I agree that confidence may be an issue for some people who think they are not hired because they are 'unattractive.' I would like to see a similar study done where the same 'attractive people' apply for similar positions but with different confident & shy attitudes.
Banker sacked for being 'too sexy' had surgery to look like Playboy model {AOL Lifestyle UK}
Jun 10th 2010 8:14AM Pretty is as pretty does. She's obviously superficial, so maybe was fired for something more along those lines. Attractiveness is no gurantee of a faithful companion - Angelina Jolie and Liz Hurly have both had partners cheat on them. Perhaps she needs to work on what's inside, first.
Quick belly busters {That's Fit UK}
Jun 10th 2010 7:59AM I highly disagree, in part because this seems to be an advert. However, my friend who is a nutritionist said you can have very firm ab muscles and they can still be covered in layers of fat. The only way to really loose weight is good old fashioned cardio - any kind of exercise that gets the heart rate up. And of course having a balanced diet.
Debit card disasters: What to do when you get burned {WalletPop}
Apr 1st 2010 3:43PM It happened to me but my bank was very vigilent and returned the money in a few days. But the money was being withdrawn in Russia. They actually called my home in GA to ask if I was withdrawing money from Russia (on a Sunday, too.) I confirmed that I was not and they went into action. I asked if it was possibly from an online purchase, but they thought it was from a merchant who are supposed to empty the machines in their stores on a regular basis but don't always and the information can be hacked from far and wide. I still use a debit card but try to use it as a credit card when possible. Here in the Europe they've moved to chip & pin cards which are harder to skim.
Money College: One student's losing battle with private student loans {WalletPop}
Feb 26th 2010 7:00PM Perhaps the govt. should just make university more affordable and nip the loan problem in the bud. i am by no means a proponent of socialism - it has its problems I would not want to be stuck with long term -but here in Europe, it was once free and they whined when they had to start paying $2,000 a year here in Enlgand, no matter what university it is. It can be a bit more in other countries, but not much more than $8,000 a year. at least she's borrowed money for education, rather than clothes and vacations!
Baggage fees could soar...again {WalletPop}
Feb 2nd 2010 9:50PM Yeah - soon it will be more cost effective just to buy new clothes when you arrive somewhere! It would still be cheaper to mail them back home after your trip!
America's fattest city reduces Jamie to tears {AOL Lifestyle UK}
Jan 20th 2010 1:57PM Please don't lump all Americans together with west virginians, who are stereo-typed as people who marry their cousins! I love his shows, and so would many more educated Americans. Also note that he didn't seem to be met by such rudeness in his trip across the US.
Beware the Nigerian Landlord Scam {Rented Spaces}
Dec 8th 2009 8:25PM Well, David, of course they don't say they're from Nigeria. They usually say they're half British, half Australian/Canadian/American - whatever, for some reason. Also, they don't have nigeria.com email addresses. Sometimes they put up pictures of models from the 1980's as their own.
Beware the Nigerian Landlord Scam {Rented Spaces}
Dec 8th 2009 8:09PM The scammers do whatever they can to make you feel at ease about hte transaction. This scam is certainly not new. In London theyve put a new twist on it, saying you can wire the money to a friend or relative and just email them a scan of the receipt, which I am sure they or a cohort then use to pick up the money with a fake ID, since money wiring services aren't exactly stringent. I am across this when trying to secure an apartment before I arrived. After looking at A LOT of ads, you could begin to tell which were fake straight away - same layout, poor English and spelling, telling you all the attractions of the area as if you're a tourist looking for a hotel, always in the most desireable part of town and always out of town, if not out of the country. Just for kicks, I told them I'd send the scanned receipt as soon as my friend picked up the money. I didn't hear from them again.
Mom Picks Up Daughter On Horse, School Balks {ParentDish}
Sep 9th 2009 7:12AM Um . . .didnt people used to pick up their kids on horseback all the time less than a hundred years ago? And what if someone picked up their kid on a motorcycle? I think they're more dangerous than horses, but doubt the school would have refused to hand over the child. And two hours wait? What is going on?!! Bureaucracy run rampant! Put an end to the bureaucratic madness already!
