Student Braves Controversy, Refuses to Recite Pledge {ParentDish}
Nov 17th 2009 8:18AM As a substitute, I agree with her decision to send the child to the office. Subs do not know the regular behavior in the classroom. If we ask a child to do something, we expect a civil response. If he had said "I'm sorry, I do not say the pledge, but I will stand" then none of this would have happened. I have had children in class who do not recite the pledge out of religous reasons. Sometimes the teacher leaves a note stating that Child X will stand, but will not recite the pledge. Othertimes, they just stand. Being a substitute is extremely hard.
Octomom Drama Continues {ParentDish}
Feb 26th 2009 12:57PM Isn't it interesting that she is doing for a graduate degree in Psychology? She is self-medicating with her perceived lonely childhood by having as many children as possible. I feel for her parents and for the friend who unwittingly became the father of 14 children.
As much as I dislike having the government involved in private lives, I think this is truly a case for intervention by Children's Protective Services (or whatever it is called in CA). These children, all 14 of them, need to be placed in loving homes, perhaps in sets of two or three, with contact with each other, of course, and their mother needs serious mental help!
10 Ways to Get Yourself Labeled as an Ugly American {Gadling}
Nov 19th 2008 8:22AM I always found the answer to being an American was to say that I am a Texan. Europeans have a love affair with the state of Texas in general. They think we all have cattle and ride horses to school and work every day. I have never had a problem during the times I have visited Europe. I make sure I am polite, wait my turn and say please and thank you in the language of the country I am visiting. It doesn't take much to learn those words, they are in all the guide books, and they make a world of difference.
Naive Travelers Pay $200 for Snack in India {Gadling}
Nov 19th 2008 8:10AM Sodas cost more in Europe, so does bottled water and the tap water isn't the best to drink. When you plan a trip abroad, prepare for higher food costs. Check the menu posted outside the door before you go in. If you are on a budget, but bread, fruit, cheese and bottled water at the small grocery stores and have a picnic in the park. If in doubt about the price, ask how much before you order. If the wait staff won't tell you, excuse yourself and leave.
School Divided Over Pledge {ParentDish}
Nov 18th 2008 9:37AM There are several religious groups that do not allow their members to say the pledge. As a teacher, I see these children standing beside their desks respectfully, arms at their side, while the rest of the class recites the pledge. None of the other students say anything about those who do not say the pledge, they mind their own business and everyone is happy.
Sarah Palin - Babies, lipstick, and politics {ParentDish}
Sep 7th 2008 5:04PM I watched Sarah Palin's speech. It appeared to me that Trig was held by his father during the majority of the speech. Trig is a fortunate little boy to have a large and loving family. I like Palin, she represents everything a woman can be, without coming out sounding like "I am woman, hear me roar". Obviously her entire family supports her as Governor and will continue to support her when they move to Washington DC. She and John McCain will make an awesome team.
Sarah Palin - Babies, lipstick, and politics {ParentDish}
Sep 6th 2008 5:27PM I keep reading here about Palin leaving her children at home, not taking care of them, etc. Did anyone think that her husband is also responsible for those children? People see nothing wrong with men running around all over the world with jobs and leaving the women home to take care of the children. In this case, it is reversed. Sarah has a very supportive husband who has taken on the majority of the child raising responsibilities. Good for him! I know several men who chose to stay home with the kids while their wives returned to the workforce. The made a choice that went against the norm. The Palin family has made choices that work for them, I like the family. I like their honestly.
Jon and Kate - Are they good enough parents for TV? {ParentDish}
Jul 31st 2008 1:07PM One thing that I haven't seen mentioned: This is a reality series and the video is edited! It is edited before the public sees it, and edited in a way to make the story sell! Kate may be controlling, Jon may be passive - the editor's are going to play that to the hilt.
How skimpy is too skimpy for a prom dress? {Stylelist}
May 13th 2008 9:12PM What is sad, these dresses are available at many stores. The less material, the more the girls want the dresses. I can go to almost any store at the mall and find a dress similar to this one, where way too much is shown and nothing is left to the imagination. Hollywood and the music industry aren't helping either. Everytime we see photos of so-called stars, they are showing parts of their anatomy that are better left covered in public. Where has modesty gone?
The reunion versus the trains {ParentDish}
Mar 17th 2008 10:57AM Go to the reunion! Yes, the train museum will be there in the future and you need to do something for you and your wife.
