How is an expat different from a "migrant worker"? {Gadling}

Dec 30th 2007 10:02PM I think this a really good point that most people, myself included, don't even realize they're contributing to. However, I do have one possible insight into the difference in the two terms/concepts. While this is more of a stereotype, and certainly doesn't apply to all (or possibly even most), I think generally "expats" are seeking an alternate, relatively temporary, experience. On the other hand, much of the "migrant worker" group might not have much intent to return to their home country and in many cases would gladly seek citizenship and permanent residence in their immigrated country. In the end, realistically, the end effects/results of the two probably aren't any different from each other, and while the economic status is very much a part of it, the vocabulary can be related to the intent of those described, and therefore how people respond to teir presence.

Gadling's Grand Giveaway Day 5: Eagle Creek Voyage 65L {Gadling}

Dec 21st 2007 12:25PM Oh, how I'd love this pack, not just a "new" one, but having one at all. The first backpacking trips I took, I managed to somehow destroy the packs through wear and tear (likely due to shoddy quality gear). All the trips since then, I've managed to borrow packs from friends (also economically good for me), but I even managed to partially ruin one of those too. So, my luck has been terrible with these things, and it'd be wonderful if Gadling could reverse my luck and entrust me with this piece of Eagle Creek goodness.

Gadling's Grand Giveaway Day 4: Planet Earth DVD - The Complete Series {Gadling}

Dec 20th 2007 9:58PM I was unable to catch the whole series when it aired, but the parts I did see were absolutely breath-taking - a superb piece of work for sure - even the narrating seemed top notch, which further adds to the quality of the experience. So... to be able to have the whole thing on DVD, and to continue to enjoy its magic time and time again, would be wonderful.

Gadling's Grand Giveaway Day 3: Journeys of a Lifetime {Gadling}

Dec 20th 2007 9:47PM This book looks like the perfect decoration for my coffee table. My last trip was to Central America, specifically Nicaragua and Costa Rica. While most are probably somewhat familiar with Costa Rica, and it is a lush, gorgeous green country, Nicaragua blew me away.

I was able to experience the majority of the country from coast to inland volcano, and from small villages to huge cities - Nicaragua certainly has something for everybody, but the most amazing part was the people: very friendly and very proud of their country, despite years of corrupt government, with most still living in some form of poverty. I just could not believe just how much both the country and its people had to offer - wonderful trip.

As for my next trip, this last one has just encouraged me to head farther south, into South America. I'd love to explore all the landscapes and cultures that continent has to offer.

MacBooks said to get Core Duo, iSight {Engadget}

Apr 7th 2006 4:50PM oops - perhaps I should read things more thoroughly (obviously)... confusion could indeed abound here... but I'll leave it up to the ad wizards to come up with this stuff - but I probably could have gone for months without realizing there was a real difference between the two. Consumer vs. Professional - such a crock of a selling point.
