Meet the World's Water Sommelier {Slashfood}
Nov 13th 2009 11:38PM Penn and Teller -- on their show "Bullsh*t" -- actually did an entire episode on bottled water.
They did a thing where they hired a guy to play the "water sommelier" at a restaurant, and he duped people into buying expensive water. They raved about the "bouquet" and all that, but in the end the audience knew that he was filling the fancy bottles from the hose in the back.
Water is water. This guy should get off his high horse and get a real job.
Sorry... "Water sommelier"? This is pure, unadulterated, crap.
Turkey Brining 101 - How to Brine That Bird {Slashfood}
Nov 11th 2009 6:29PM Here's my problem.
Every year, I'm invited to cook the Turkey. But every year, my in-laws insist that the turkey be stuffed. (Who am I to argue? It's their house, and they let me marry their daughter.)
So can I stuff a brined turkey? Or will the stuffing come out tasting salty? (And can I control for that by under-seasoning the stuffing before shoving it in?)
Pitahaya - Feast Your Eyes {Slashfood}
Oct 16th 2009 11:07AM Last weekend at the Brentwood (Los Angeles) Farmers Market, a vendor was cutting slices for people right off the fruit. It had a really nice sweetness, but not a ton of flavor beyond that.
The Biggest Loser: Week Five {TV Squad}
Oct 14th 2009 12:40PM I could deal with "Trazey" if she was actually interesting to watch.
She's not. Her craziness is actually pretty predictable at this point, and all it serves to do is create awkward and "pseudo-dramatic" moments that the producers milk for all its worth. She's a distraction to everything else...
(Like the fact that Daniel and Shay pulled those huge numbers because they had immunity last week and water-loaded. No one remembers that... not even Shay... so suddenly 27 pounds between them sounds like they worked super hard. They were game-playing as much as everyone.)
I thought the Dina step story was far more compelling. The best trainers in the world couldn't get a totally capable young woman to jump two feet in the air. If it weren't for the fact that she's such a psychological wreck, it would have been hilarious.
Does the computerized music in Glee bug you? {TV Squad}
Sep 17th 2009 7:44PM The super-canned overly-produced computerized music is going to be the thing that ruins this show. And its shocking that the producers don't see it.
What songs are on your Glee wish list? {TV Squad}
Sep 16th 2009 7:09PM "If they were able to make Kanye's 'Golddigger' work..."
I think that premise is debatable. It was poorly executed, badly dubbed, and ruined (for me, at least) the mystique of the show being about a bunch of kids who love to sing. Not to mention the (arguably racist) cliché of having the African American student be the one to do most of the (student) singing (though Morrison, the teacher, actually sang lead).
I loved "Don't Stop Believing" and "Rehab" from the pilot because it felt like the characters were singing, and because the performances actually worked nicely into the plot. They didn't feel like overproduced set pieces designed to overly a montage (Morrison's wife being all golddigger like).
iTunes 9 Genius Mixes: You don't need to be a genius to create 'em {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Sep 11th 2009 5:36PM Wait... do you need an iPhone to have a Genius Mix? And if so, why?
Logos for Mac worth the wait for Bible students {The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)}
Aug 27th 2009 11:34AM 1. Accordance is excellent. It has the JPS translation, which is pretty close to the URJ text. (Aedile - The editors of the URJ Tanakh based their translation on the JPS.)
2. Accordance also features some great other translations and tools for Jewish students/scholars: Everett Fox's translation of the Torah, the Mishnah (available in "tagged" format that allows for full word parsing), Neusner's translations of the Mishnah and Talmud, Mekhilta de Rabbi Ishmael, the Tosefta, Josephus, and more. Also, excellent Hebrew tools.
3. Accordance was made by Mac people for Mac people. That's why it's the superior product. It gets more and more intuitive with every release, it's library of available modules is growing very quickly, and it's a lot cheaper than Logos.
Here's a list of 100 iconic TV show openings (OK, maybe not 100 ... ) {TV Squad}
Aug 26th 2009 4:52PM An entire generation knows every word of the Fresh Prince theme song. First of all, it should be in the top ten. Second of all, it should have ranked higher then Perfect Strangers.
Maybe the Fresh Prince of Bel Air theme song got in one little fight, it's mama got scared, and it was sent to live with its auntie and uncle in the 95 slot.
