Co-Sleeping: Is a Family Bed Worth the Safety Concerns? {ParentDish}
Apr 11th 2011 4:48PM Please consider changing the picture at the top of this article. The surface that your mom and baby are snuggling on is totally inappropriate for bedsharing. Responsible parents who choose bedsharing for its many advantages would never choose to bedshare on a beanbag.
I'd also like to see reporters doing actual research and gather information from both sides. There are many doctors who promote bedsharing for it's positive benefits to both the mother and child.
Google Safe Bedsharing and Dr. James McKenna and The University of Notre Dame Mother-Baby Behavioral Sleep Lab.
The Unschooling Movement: School's Out ... Forever {ParentDish}
Apr 19th 2010 8:39PM "Unschooling is not homeschooling. In homeschooling, children get the same structure, discipline and curriculum they get at school. They just get it from their parents."
No, in homeschooling circles this is called "School at Home" and is just one method of home education. There are as many ways to homeschool as there are families who are homeschooling. School at Home and Unschooling are opposite extremes but clearly not the only options. I suspect most families, like my own, are somewhere in between.
CPSC to issue safety warning about popular baby slings {WalletPop}
Mar 10th 2010 11:24AM Please read this site http://babyslingsafety.blogspot.com/ to learn more about safely using baby carriers. The type of sling mentioned in this article is a very poorly designed one and should not be used because of the very real risk of positional asphyxiation. Even those with better designs can be a hazard if not used correctly.
I am the mother of 5 children and have worn all of my babies several types of carriers. I believe the safest kinds are those which keep the baby upright and chest-to-chest with mom. Baby carriers are a wonderful tool and I would hate to see moms turned off by the negative press due to this particular problem but we want our babies to be safe too! Please check out carriers like the Ergo - wwww.ergobabycarrier.com - which keeps your baby upright.

"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Put those breasts away: Woman asked to cover up while breastfeeding during flight {Gadling}
Aug 11th 2008 3:34PM "Covering up" doesn't just cover the breast. It covers the babies entire face. Go try and eat dinner under a blanket with it two inches from your face sometime and see how much you like it.
Babies certainly don't like it and they will do whatever they can to get it off them, which means *more* exposure of the mothers breast and less discreetion. On the other hand a mother who does not "cover up" has full control over her shirt and can quickly move it down to cover her breast if the child moves.
I can guarantee you that a mother who is discreetly breastfeeding her child without covering up is showing much less cleavage than the vast majority of women walking around today are!
HPV Vaccine may have unpleasant side effects {ParentDish}
Aug 10th 2008 4:47AM "eliminating the possibility of getting certain types of cancer" ....
Sorry, but this vaccine does not eliminate your risk or immunize you against cancer!
In theory it immunizes you against HPV and only a handful of strains of it. There are over a hundred strains and at least 30% of cases of cervical cancer linked to HPV are from strains NOT covered by this vaccination. In addition, while HPV is the highest known factor for developing cervical cancer, it is not the only cause of it.
There have been NO long term studies done on this vaccine for the age range they are marketing it to. There have been no studies done to show whether or not it increases the risk of other types of cancers. We have no idea what the long term side effects for the 8 million women who have taken it will be and we don't know if immunizing young girls will protect them against HPV for life or if they will have to be given "boosters" every few years, thus increasing their risk of side effects.
In addition to the "minor" side effects listed, there have been reports of deaths in young women after the administration of this vaccine. 11 were reported to VAERS as of fall 2007.
Seven medications never to give your child {That's Fit}
Nov 29th 2007 1:01AM Some of the replies seem to indicate that this list of medications is the only possible way to deal with illness in a young child. This is simply not true!
We use many different methods around here and resort to OTC medications only in extreme cases. For instance, a young child who is being breastfed with benefit greatly from just being with mama and eating often. Breastmilk can also be used to clear sinuses, among many other things.
Herbal remedies, while not harmless if used incorrectly, can benefit a family greatly if they are willing to learn about them and use them correctly. Homeopathic remedies do not have any side effects and generally work very quickly!
Dietary changes are another very simple way to encourage comfort and healing.
Do you like formula better than breast milk for your baby? {That's Fit}
Jan 11th 2007 8:08PM "Many mothers use formula because its more CONVENIENT, "
Huh??? How is it more convenient to go to the store, pay money for the stuff, take it home, mix it up, put in a bottle, and then feed it to your child??? Not to mention the fact that you have to get up in the middle of the night for feedings.
The only thing I need to do to breastfeed is lift up my shirt and having adopted the practice of sharing sleep, I don't lose sleep having to get up and feed her.
Do you like formula better than breast milk for your baby? {That's Fit}
Jan 11th 2007 6:30PM All four of my children have been excusively breastfeed, including extended, tandem, and in public.
What I find ridiculous is the continued assertion of those who are against breastfeeding in public, is that they are concerned with modesty and privacy. Yeah, right.
There was an excellant quote in Mothering magazine this month... "People new to seeing breastfeeding may interpret their inability to stop staring as evidence that breastfeeding has sexual overtones. It does not." (Peggy O'Mara)
