If you go to the "Man vs. Wild" website, you can read viewer conversations with Bear, and he states the life vest was required by the execs, in which he told them after the episode, if they wanted him to continue the series they must allow him to do everything the way he wants. 2. yes there are camera people with him, which he explains at the begining of the show, they cannot interact or interfere unless there is a medical emergency.
