Himalayan High: gear for the trek {Gadling}

Jul 4th 2010 8:13AM You might find my video of what trekking gear I took on my first trip to Nepal:
http://blog.tylerbell.net/2008/05/21/trekking-in-nepal-episode-1-intro/

I'm actually in Nepal now and recently completed 2 treks in the Annapurnas.

I have to say, in all politeness, this post is quite general and not quite helpful if you posses any common sense (I should really take hiking shoes to the Himalayas?)

Let me expound regarding sleeping bags. You don't need 4-season or even 3-season bags. I only trek with a sleeping bag liner. Sleeping bags are one of the bulkiest things you'll carry. The weather you'll encounter from start to finish may go from sub-tropical heat to alpine snow. A light-weight silk liner adds about 20 degrees of temp to any bag, or acts as a barrier should you (only) use the numerous blankets available at all Tea Houses in Nepal.

I'd also like to see more info on what gear is available in Nepal (everything), the general price points (its cheaper to get in Nepal), and how to navigate quality (falsely branded gear). Or what gear is better to bring with you to ensure a quality product (backpack, shoes).
