Jan 11th 2013 5:08PM It's very obvious these are rules for someone renting a ROOM, not an apartment. Yes, if you are living INSIDE of someone home renting a room, there are certainly going to be additional rules of conduct demanded. No pork ? Well it's likely the homeowner is Jewish. 15 minute showers ? Why would anyone spend MORE than 15 minutes in a shower to begin with..but yes maybe everyone else would like some hot water too. Nothing seems particulary insane when you put the story into context.

Jan 14th 2012 8:45AM I am always suspicious of all these "Amish" shops...in that, the true Amish typically avoid interacting with "moderns" and shun the use of cash registers, adding machines, credit cards and the like. Most commonly if you are entering a shop and buying "Amish" goods with your credit card or being rung up on the cash register, you've "been had" by a Mennonite family who simply know the tourists are more familiar with the word "Amish" then the more accurate Mennonite...who dress similarly, but accept modern forms of business practice.

Sep 30th 2011 3:51PM To me the "eruv" is the equivalent of the "selling of indulgences" by the Catholic Church in the late 1400's. Sanctifying a piece of string in order to break religious law, allows community memebers to officially call themselves "observant" while technically they are breaking the law. These sort of social behaviors always give rise to the notion that it is ok to cheat the system. If the laws are inconvenient, then change the law. Don't teach an entire community how to cheat it.

The hideous muck they serve on-board now, generally ends up in the trash, as most of it is inedible, and even if it were, you are not going to find two choices that everyone is going to want.

Opinion: Adoptive Mother Should Be Sent to the Gulag {ParentDish}
Apr 12th 2010 4:25PM I am an adoptive parent of an abused child. It is not unusual and is actually typical for an older child to act out aggressively after a few months of having been placed in a new home.
This woman had obviously not given any thought to what this child was going through emotionally, having lost his own family & moved to a foreign county. No matter what fairy tale vision you have of your home, an abandoned child is suffering a loss. They have no way to express the pain they are suffering but to act out. It is the duty of an adoptive parent to weather the storm, with the child and show that you are caring enough to help them through their pain.
There are many resources available from social workers to psychologists, who could have educated this woman, but clearly she was too selfish to have bothered trying to make this work.
Abandoning a child in that manner was the most horrifying and painful thing she could have done to a human being. I am repulsed by the level of selfishness she has exhibited, and hope she is never allowed near children again.
