Designer knock-offs taken in $25 million raid {WalletPop}
Apr 20th 2008 12:25PM Dear Miss Tracy L. Coenen,
My name is Chief Jeff. I'm doing my second tour here in the desert of Kuwait with the US Navy in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. It's no secret that all the workers here at the camps are from India, Nepal, Bangladesh and other poor nations. We see them day in and day out, cleaning up after us. All year long some of them only wear flip-flops, and yes it does get cold here in the winter, not to mention that we are walking on gravel all day long. Try doing that in flip-flops. Most of these camps are not paved. These poor souls have NO money for new shoes. I read about the NYC seizure of all these shoes. I'm certain they will be cut-up and basically 'wasted' when they are perfectly good sneakers that can be donated to these poor 'TCN's' (Third Country Nationals). Last time I was here, SK2 Peggy C and myself collected, washed and distributed 1,100 lbs of clothes, sneakers, blankets and food for these very same poor people who are literally getting 'maybe' $35 a week.
It would only be the 'Right thing to do' to give all those seized shoes to the local poor in Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan. I don't care about the fake Gucci bags, this is only about the shoes. If every seizure around the US and abroad take on this task, the overlooked workers in the middle eastern 'war-zone' would benefit and no materials would be cut-up and thrown into the land-fill, thus THINKING GREEN as well. Everyone wins. The poor TCN's get the shoes, the counterfeiters as well as the Law enforcement officials have a clear conscious knowing the gear went to a worthy cause, the military members feel satisfied seeing the poor collect new desperately needed shoes and even Mother Earth herself wouldn't have all this unnecessary plastic and rubber in her landfills.
So in closing, can you please see how we can divert all these doomed sneakers to some people who wouldn't know or care if they were Nike's, Converse, Keds or not. The important thing is that they have shoes that fit so that they can work year round in comfort and even walk with a spring in their step.
Thank you for your attention
Chief Petty Officer
Jeff
