What's the most annoying Rachael Ray catchphrase? {Slashfood}

Dec 13th 2007 3:45AM I thinks it's incredibly condescending (and annoying) that she refers to her audience (many of whom are probably older than she is) as "kids". "De-lish" grates to no end, and I could certainly live for the rest of my life without ever hearing "Yum-O" again. I also find it somewhat disturbing when a 37-year old woman (she might be older, I'm not sure)refers to her husband as "my honey" and to her father as "my Daddy" on national television.

Gift Guide: Must haves for the new cook {Slashfood}

Dec 9th 2007 12:27PM You're absolutely right, not everyone cooks the same way, and if your headline read "My favourite kitchen tools", I wouldn't even think of saying anything about your choices. But your title is "Gift Guide: Must haves for the new cook", and those of us who commented on the garlic press, didn't think it was a "must have", that's all. Nothing personal:-)

Gift Guide: Must haves for the new cook {Slashfood}

Dec 7th 2007 11:50AM I thought the same exact thing about the garlic press, Userless! I use plenty of garlic in my cooking, but I never had a need in a garlic press.

Officials might ban fast-food restaurants {Slashfood}

Sep 17th 2007 10:53PM It's both funny and sad to read some of the comments - virtually every one of those who claim they eat healthy sounds VERY angry, arrogant and awfully self-righteous... almost as if you are just hungry and cranky, really. I am very far from being overweight, and I probably eat at fast food establishments 2 or 3 times a year (an order of fries), however, I think it's very distasteful (let alone plain rude) insult anybody for their choice of food or their appearance, even if it doesn't seem right to you. People gain weight for different reasons. If you're skinny and eat healthy, it's wonderful, but why does it have to come along with a foul mouth? What are you so angry about? "Fat people" don't scare me, but blind self-righteous fanatics of any kind, whether religious, "healthy" or "sober" - do.

I think it is despicable that the government in a free country would dictate what its citizens should or shouldn't eat. Even if the intentions are good - we all know all too well where the road paved with good intentions leads to. I'd think that investing in proper education (and perhaps limiting fast and/or other junk food commercials on children's channels) would be a better step in the right direction.

Sugar found to be more addictive than cocaine {Slashfood}

Aug 29th 2007 4:22PM It's not the first time that Marisa's title is misleading ("diet soda no better for you than regular" immediately comes to mind. Perhaps instead of jumping at a "sensational" title, Marisa should actually read the report she writes about and then think of a title that would reflect it correctly.

Man gets cheese, sues McDonald's {Slashfood}

Aug 15th 2007 5:10PM To Lydia ("A "cheese allergy" is really lactose intolerance, the symptoms of which include abdominal cramps, bloating, flatulence, and diarrhea. Seems a steep price to pay for passing gas.")

Just so you know, people with lactose intolerance or milk allergy can have more and less severe allergic reactions. Yes, it can be as little as "passing gas" and as much as severe respiratory or skin reactions. And even if "processed cheese products are primarily oil, not milk", some people might get really severe reactions even from the little amount of dairy that the processed cheeses have in them.

You don't need to belittle the symptoms/allergic reaction/amount of pain to see that the man in question is wrong. Remember the woman who sued McD because her coffee was too hot? Did it hurt when she was burnt by it? I bet it did! Was it anybody else's fault but hers? NO! Same thing here - did the man get very sick after having eaten a piece of cheese (and not just from "passing gas")? It is certainly possible. Was it anybody else's fault but his? NO! Just like it was incredibly stupid to put a cup of hot coffee between one's legs in a moving car, it is incredibly stupid to not check what you're eating when you have food allergies.

Man gets cheese, sues McDonald's {Slashfood}

Aug 14th 2007 12:32AM "So if he ordered a "hamburger without cheese" it is perfectly understandable if they were confused thinking he was specially ordering cheese."

I'm sorry, this makes no sense to me - if a hamburger comes without cheese by definition, asking for it specifically WITHOUT cheese might make you think that whoever orders it, does, in fact, want cheese? My husband is lactose intolerant, when I happen to order, say, a plain cheese steak sandwich for him, even though "plain" implies "no cheese", I always make sure that it is clear that no cheese or butter should be on that sandwich - I usually make fun of myself while doing that, but I'd rather look stupid than risk getting my husband sick (I actually don't think he does it when he orders for himself, but I am always extra careful).

Now, that said, my husband would NEVER take a bite of any food that could possibly be served with cheese without checking first that the cheese is, indeed, not there. Which is why I certainly agree that it's a frivolous lawsuit - it is amazing to me that people simply refuse to take responsibility for their own oversight (or stupidity, really). Whenever people do something really daft, they rush to blame somebody else for it. It must be wonderful to live in the world where everything that happens to you is somebody else's fault.

Giada de Laurentiis gives "food porn" new meaning {Slashfood}

Jul 30th 2007 4:18PM It is funny how men are "allowed" to dislike other people, male or female, without being presumed "jealous". But God forbid, a woman dislikes another woman - she must be jealous! There are many beautiful, talented and successful women who I like, respect and appreciate. Giada happens to be annoying as hell, but not because she is pretty (in fact, I usually have to "defend" her looks when my husband points at her "enormous" head - his words, not mine) and successful, but because she is unbelievably phony - from her wide-open mouth (it must take years of practice to talk with your mouth THAT open!) to fake mini-orgasms she has whenever she puts something into that mouth, to her manner of speech and the way she rolls her eyes. Oh, and I know all this because I used to watch her show (at least, unlike Aunt Sandy, the girl can cook), but at some point, I couldn't take it any more, she just makes me nauseous. She might be the nicest woman in person, but she conveys this overwhelming fake-ness on telly that makes her impossible to watch. As for the pictures, as some noted before me, they certainly would have looked sexier(if that was the purpose)if something like chocolate had been used instead of very-much-blood-like-looking tomato sauce. But hey, if she's happy enough with the pics to have them published, why would I care?

Diet soda no better for you than regular {Slashfood}

Jul 25th 2007 3:36PM Marisa, sadly, I just lost my respect for you - you proved to be just as manipulative and "playful" with the information as the 5 o'clock news - to say "Diet Soda is no better than regular soda", when you yourself write "They don't think that it is the ingredients in the diet soda that lead to health problems...", is, to say the least, inconsistent and yes, as Derek said, ridiculous.

Watermelon Summer Salad {Slashfood}

Jul 15th 2007 6:41PM lauralemay, I can assure you, Nigella didn't "invent" the watermelon feta salad. My grandmother used to make a watermelon, feta & black olive salad every summer at least 20-25 years ago - and trust me, the only nigella she knew about were nigella seeds.
