Plane Answers: Tapping into ATC communications, tracking aircraft and a 60 second takeoff rule? {Gadling}
Dec 8th 2008 4:31PM I love listening to ATC when I'm on United flights, it's my favorite part of the flight. That station single-handedly helped my cure my fear of flying.
Every strange movement of the plane bothered me, but once I realized it was all directions from the ATC, everything was great. A side benefit of the ATC stations is that you can sometimes get advance warning of bumpy weather, so you can try to get asleep before you reach it.
Why you should never travel on Acela Express {Gadling}
Nov 19th 2008 11:12AM I'd have to completely disagree about the Acela trains. When I had to travel between DC & New Haven, I'd regularly take the Acela trains because they were cheaper than flying, way more comfortable, and a joy to ride on. Yes, the regular trains are good too, but I think you're way off mark.
Extreme kayakers tackle 300ft reservoir in Wales {Gadling}
Nov 19th 2008 11:10AM That's some awesome video. Maybe this will spawn a new sport, competitive spillway racing, or something like that.
Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations starts up season 4 {Gadling}
Jul 7th 2008 12:48PM I absolutely love this show. His travels around the world have really been inspirational, I only wish that I could see (and eat) more of the world. Now.
I've been watching his show on DVD and Itunes, I hope they get it up on the net quickly.
Fourth of July fireworks: Find out which states bans them, which allow them {Gadling}
Jul 3rd 2008 1:25PM Here in Washington State, you can buy some little fireworks, but you can't get anything major unless you venture over to the Indian reservations. There, you can buy whatever you want. The only problem is that you have to use them there as well because you're not allowed to actually HAVE them outside the reservation.
Try the Fish Taco: Baja's Favorite Food {Gadling}
Jul 3rd 2008 1:22PM Great, now I'm hungry. :)
Thanks for the good tip on eating tacos from street vendors. I've found that these folks make some of the best food in the world.
Between reading this and watching Anthony Bourdain's show on the US/Mexico border, real Mexican food is high on my list of must tries.
Also, have you found that you needed to speak a little Spanish to order food from street vendors?
BooRah: New restaurant review database taps into dining scenes nationwide {Gadling}
Jul 2nd 2008 12:33PM I'm a big fan of Yelp when it comes to restaurant (and shopping, etc) reviews. They have a huge database of fairly detailed reviews for places all over the US; I've found it very useful when planning trips to an unfamiliar city (or even a familiar one.)
A Lesson in Mexican Gestures {Gadling}
Jun 24th 2008 6:51PM Thanks for more good tips. One of my Italian friends was nice enough to sit down and show me some italian hand gestures while I was visiting. Some of the less family-friendly gestures had the mothers in the room covering up their kids eyes.
It's funny how one gesture means nothing in one culture, but in another it could really offend someone. Good things to know! :)
Take a beer trip around the world in Washington DC {Gadling}
Jun 23rd 2008 12:29PM Ah, when I lived in DC the Brickskeller was one of my favorite meccas. Sometimes the service and the stock of beers could be bad, but when it was good it was good.
If you're in DC and want good beer but are in the Chinatown area, stop by RFD. It's run by the same people as the Brickskeller, has a robust beer selection, and has much better food. Try the buffalo burgers, they're good.
Minding your Manners in Mexico {Gadling}
Jun 18th 2008 2:16PM Thanks for the great tips.
A lot of the same habits are good ideas in Italy as well, especially when it comes to taking it easy (and asking for the bill!) Heck, I think most Americans could use to take it easy ALL the time, but especially when they travel.
