Port Orange HOA Tells Residents Yard Statues Aren't Allowed {AOL Real Estate}

Apr 5th 2013 11:36PM If you want to change the rules, the residents need to call a meeting with the HOA, and let them know how they feel.If the HOA wants to maintain conformity, they can easily establish a set of rules governing statues (lawn ornaments), by setting requirements on size and subject. I can easily understand why the HOA would ban a religious statue, I'm against them, too, but to unilaterally bar all lawn ornaments is wrong. The HOA should set size limits and limit where they can be placed and what type of ornaments would be permitted. It has to be a democratic procedure.

Palestine, Israel In Controversy Over King Herod's Tomb {Gadling}

Jan 22nd 2013 10:58AM We should look at this objectively and not put any religious twists on this. In one of the comments, it was said that the Palestinians were present before Moses. I am the farthest thing from an authority on biblical studies, but I do not remember ever seeing the words "Palestinians" in the bible anywhere. If, on the other hand, this individual commentor meant the "Philistines". that's different. However, the present day Palestinians are in no way related to the Philistines of the bible, and they are the ones. among others, who made that distinction, probably because of the connotation of the word "Philistine". This situation is a gray area. since the West Bank has not been officially declared a state, I don't think Israel's action would be looked upon as a violation of international law as Israel is in control. Some people do say some outlandish things, such as glorifying evil people. How about the Knights Templar? They did some pretty bad things, and some good ones, too. they, too, got their just or injust desserts.

Dec 21st 2012 12:42PM The notion that the NRA espouses all the time, "that guns don't kill people, people kill" is the most ludicrous and insane argument I have ever heard. And those defending guns seemingly always use the analogy that why not ban or sue the automobile manufacturers because their products kill thousands on the roads every year. I'd like to give another perspective. first, the NRA. A gun is analogous to a tool, and in this case an instrument of death and intimidation. Every tool that was invented by man doesn't do its work by itself. As I pointed out previously, a carpenter's drill doesn't make holes in wood by itself, the carpenter (holds) the drill with a bit and makes the hole. It can't be done any other way. Therefore it takes the gun owner to hold the gun and pull that trigger. So, I don't buy this so-called comparison that guns do not kill people. Guns have been invented and manufactured for just one purpose, and that is to kill.
Secondly, many people attempt to justify gun ownership by comparing it to the automobile. Admittedly, autos do kill people, but they weren't invented for that purpose, and I maintain that auto accidents are random acts of negligence and not something that is pre-meditated. However to clear the air, I am not referring to handguns, rifles, etc. The current topic and issue is about military style weaponry and extended range ammo clips that the presidential task force is attempting to find a solution to gun control. NRA proponents seem to feel that the government wants to abolish their second-amendment rights and take away all guns from everyone. That is not the case, and gun owners need not be paranoid. But, we do need to act quickly and decisively on the proliferation of military style automatic high-powered weapons. My feeling is they should be outlawed for the average citizen. These weapons should be the sole domain of the military and civilian police. You cannot buy a hand grenade, rocket launcher, or bazooka therefore no one should be allowed to purchase any type of military style weapon. That is battle-field stuff, not street stuff.

Dec 21st 2012 12:05PM We're not talking about ordinary guns, single shot, semi-automatic hand guns or rifles, the issue is military style automatic weapons that can kill lots of people with a single pull on the trigger. No civilian should or needs to have one and therefore shouldn't be able to buy one including an extended range ammo clip. Can you buy hand grenades? No, neither should any manufacturer of firearms be allowed to sell such weapons to an ordinary citizen. It is pure unadulterated BS that guns don't kill people. That's what guns are designed for and that's exactly what they do. It is a tool of death. No manufactured tool that man uses, does the job by itself. Drills don't make holes in wood by themselves, either. A gun in someone's hand is lethal and intimidating. Think of those kids as one of your own.

Dec 21st 2012 11:53AM It doesn't sound to me like this old guy is carrying a military-style automatic rifle with an extended clip. No one, and I repeat, no one is banning the second amendment or attempting to take away your gun, unless it is am AK-47 or M-16, or similar type weapon. No one needs to have this type of weapon. This type of firearm should be the sole domain of the military or civilian police. For the same reason you cannot buy a hand grenade or rocket launcher, no one should be allowed to purchase any rifle that can fire many rounds at the pull of a trigger, nor do they need a clip that can hold more than 10 rounds. As a tanker, my 45 cal sidearm could only hold 9 rounds.

Dec 21st 2012 8:43AM I wanted to reply to Russ Johnson. I accidentally put my cursor on the plus sign, but I disagree with him. My understanding is that the weapons ban was lifted under the George Bush's presidency. When we ban automatic assault rifles, we mean that is it illegal to sell (buy) them anywhere and manufacturers can only supply them under government contract to the military or police. That is my idea of a ban.

Galley Gossip: Flight attendant haunted layover hotel ghost stories (and a haunted plane!) {Gadling}

Nov 2nd 2011 11:01AM I don't mean to be pedantic, but I think you meant to use "who" instead of "whom". I do believe your story as I have read books on the subject. If you want to read a good book, read: "Many Lives, Many Masters" by Brian Weiss. I think you will like it. He is a Miami psychiatrist.

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 2011 Cover Girl Is Irina Shayk {Stylelist (Main)}

Feb 17th 2011 10:30AM Is it the swim suit that gets any attention, or the girl in it with all her attributes? Probably the latter. To me, the swim suit is just like any other, nothing so really different from any fashion store or from previous years or issues of SI

On 'Teach,' Tony Danza Literally Sweats Through His First Day of School (VIDEO) {AOL TV}

Oct 4th 2010 2:11PM Although I don't know for sure, and I haven't seen the episode, I am ready to assume that Tony Danza probably needs to be inserviced on what to expect from kids that age and locale, and what practices and approaches work best. After he gets his feet wet, I'm sure he will become more confident and apply methods that have proven successful with inner city kids. It was always my belief that actors would make the best teachers in the sense they have the gift of drawing the attention of an "audience" to what they are trying to get across. That is a skill in itself and many regular teachers don't have that. Often, TV and the movies in general portray schools in a totally inaccurate picture of what school is like or how it operates. There is much exaggeration and things that are for TV audiences, but in reality do not exist. For example in this case, a principal would tend not to read the riot act to a new teacher, but would rather tend to be encouraging and offer any help the teacher might need.

Fake ATMs: Should you worry? {WalletPop}

Jul 10th 2010 9:26PM I believe it's safe to use a bank ATM, i.e., one that is attached to the bank and is part of the bank's technology. To use a stand alone ATM machine is downright risky, as some of them have been set up as decoys by thieves and this has been in the news. It's probably even better when you have to use your bank card to get into the lobby of the bank to access the ATM. In this day of I.D. theft, it's always best to be careful and prudent.
