Vegas not so recession proof after all, baby {WalletPop}
Mar 13th 2009 9:27PM These year-to-year numbers are misleading. 2006 and 2007 were very unusual boom years. Las Vegas is still doing 2004-2005 type numbers.
Funny... in 2004, we all thought that the numbers were great and all was wonderful!
Gaming win is down because during the boom, most casinos tightened slots and table game rules. People got tired of losing.
Hotel rates have pretty much simply corrected. For decades, Las Vegas was known for having amazing rooms at dirt cheap prices. Once again, Las Vegas offers amazing rooms at dirt cheap prices.
If you look at the long haul (eliminating 9/11 and the 2006 boom), Las Vegas numbers are fine and normal. The only reason gaming companies are struggling financially is because they over-built (or planned expansions that were simply too big) during the boom times.
If Las Vegas Sands (Venetian) hadn't built Palazzo, they would be fine right now. Same with MGM Mirage building CityCenter. Same with Harrah's buying tons of land directly behind Harrah's.

Thanksgiving in Vegas - Not a New Comedy from National Lampoon {Holidash News}
Jan 15th 2009 2:08AM Actually... Christmas (and the 10 days leading up to it) have always been very slow in Las Vegas. And... always a time of year when one could get the best deals and/or comps in town.
Far flung families have always taken advantage of this to do a get-together. Not a new concept, or one because of the economy.

Airlines Complain about Vegas Airport's Plan {Gadling}
Dec 1st 2008 8:49PM Unfortunately, the new terminal will be domestic and the lousy international terminal will stay the same.
I agree that the international terminal is the worst first impression we can give to those who fly so far to get here.

Vegas HUMMER dealer switching to SMART {Autoblog}
Oct 11th 2008 5:49PM The problem is that Hummer sales were TOO successful here in Las Vegas. They were all over the place. You can't make a trip to the grocery store without seeing them on the road.
Certainly the economy and price of gas halted the interest in new Hummer sales, but the simple glut of them (plus inexpensive resales for those wanting to buy used) left no demand.
When everyone seems to have something, it is no longer special.

Virgin America completes inaugural JFK - Vegas flight {Gadling}
Oct 4th 2008 6:20PM Despite (and maybe because of) other airlines cutting Las Vegas flights, this may be a golden opportunity for Virgin. Besides a NYC-Las Vegas nonstop flight, it probably opens up a one-stop connection from many other Virgin destinations.
Virgin Atlantic is the only airline flying a 747 into Las Vegas on a daily basis.
Interesting post!

Destination Wedding: Las Vegas {Aisledash}
May 28th 2008 10:34PM What a well researched post!
If I may add:
Although plenty of bachelor party options for men, many companies run bachlorette parties that include hitting a beefcake show, club, afternoon at a spa, you get the picture. Or a group of women can simply choose to hit a beefcake show.
For guys going to adult clubs, go where you want to go. Cab drivers get kickbacks from certain clubs to divert you. Most all clubs pay a kickback. Some pay more than others.
Getting off that topic, an option that people often don't think about is actually getting married in a hotel suite. Instead of (what is usually) a somewhat rushed chapel wedding, using a suite high above The Strip with an awesome view makes things even more memorable.
Guests can mingle and you get the suite for the night when all is said and done.
With the internet, doing advance research for flowers, a cake, and similar arrangements can be made in advance or one can rely on the hotel to cater what you need.
I'd add more, but you did a great job!

Competing with the NFL {Blog Maverick}
Jun 4th 2007 12:49AM Saw this story in our local Las Vegas paper:
LV part of plan for football league: Eight-team UFL would start in '08
http://www.lvrj.com/news/7761872.html
Despite a mediocre record, the Las Vegas Outlaws of the XFL had amazing support. However, I feel that the combination of the prime games on Saturday night (when everyone is out or when men stuck at home have to watch what their woman wants [pity them]) was just a bad time slot.
Friday nights not do much better.
My thoughts and suggestion? Do a winter/spring league. I love football more than the NBA (sorry... just my thing). I'd love to watch football through April.
HOWEVER... keep all the teams in the south half of the U.S. (plus Mexico). Places where in the dead of winter, it is still warm enough to see a game. And... areas where football is loved.
Bottom Line:
No teams in New York or Chicago. The XFL showed that playing to that audience didn't work, plus too cold to watch a game.
Teams should be in the Southern half of the U.S. (and Mexico if needed). Teams in cities with no NFL team.
Make the season Feb - April and have the playoffs and UFC super bowl to happen just before NBA playoffs happen.
But.. with the zillions of football games already available every day of the week now in the fall... good effing luck.
The XFL almost had it right. Almost. Winter/Spring works in football happy markets in warmer climates. That will work. Friday nights in the fall... no dice.
