Racing on foot through the Sahara {Gadling}
Nov 9th 2009 2:16PM Hi Sam,
Sounds like you had a great race. I'm a big fan of 4 Deserts series and have been following along for some time. Can't wait for the Atacama! That is a place that is very high on my list of places to visit, and I'll definitely write something up on the event when it's underway, both here and on my Adventure Blog.
Keep up the great work!

Nov 9th 2009 11:38AM Oh yes! How could I forget the hogs! They're all over the place too, and make tasty dinners for those big cats that I mentioned above. :)
Know the limitations of GPS when hiking {Gadling}
Nov 2nd 2009 11:09AM Agreed Nick, this is just the start. You can do a whole series on just how navigate with a compass and map, and how to add a GPS to that mix to increase safety and accuracy.
Heck! Come to think of it, many people don't even know how to use their GPS properly to begin with.
The Catch-22 of Adventure Travel and the Environment {Gadling}
Oct 15th 2009 11:01AM Thanks Katie! Glad you liked this post.
And you've hit the nail right on the head. We all want to visit these amazing places, and we don't always think about the effects we're having on those places. That is changing, but in some cases, a lot of damage has already been done, and I do think that when things aren't handled properly, we are definitely a big part of the problem.
Climate change bugs climbers on Everest {Gadling}
Oct 13th 2009 1:12PM It's not so much that the snow and ice are melting at the summit, although temperatures there do continue to rise, and the -15º F number is not always accurate any more. The real cause of the shrinking summit is due to less snow and ice falling on it, causing the cornice to shrink in size and become less solid.
Should a medical exam be required before a major trek? {Gadling}
Sep 30th 2009 3:30PM Well said Rick. I'm with you on that as well. I get them for myself because it's a good idea. Don't like being told that I have to though.
Should a medical exam be required before a major trek? {Gadling}
Sep 30th 2009 10:43AM I'm right there with you Michael. It really does open a can of worms, and it seems like they're looking to make someone ultimately responsible. I don't want to sound callous about three deaths on the Kokoda at all, but when you have 6000 people hiking it each year, there is bound to be some issues.
I'm all for making these treks safer, but I also don't like to see over reaction either. I also happen to believe that we are all responsible for ourselves when taking an adventure trek like this one.

Sep 30th 2009 10:19AM Thanks for the clarification Paul's case NZM. It is appreciated.
And I personally tend to agree with you that when it's your time, it's your time, and that could happen anywhere. As I mentioned in the article, an examination may or may not have revealed anything for any of these three young people. Their deaths may simply not have had anything to do with the trail at all, they just happened to be there when it was their time.
Still a physical exam can't hurt and is probably worth doing none the less.
Icon A5 personal aircraft puts us one step closer to the Jetsons {Gadling}
Sep 26th 2009 10:12PM Thanks for the correction David. I updated the article to reflect that this is a light sports aircraft, although I suspect anyone looking to droop $140k on one of these would be aware of the distinction.
This is a potentially revolutionary aircraft though. Looks like it would be fun to fly!
