The Blue Mosque, Istanbul (1 of 20)
This iconic structure was built between 1609 and 1616 during the reign of Ottoman Sultan Ahmet I. The massive complex included a marketplace, public kitchen, hospital, caravansary, schools, and the Mausoleum of Sultan Ahmet I. Why is it called the Blue Mosque? When sunlight flows through the 260 windows of the structure the tiles glow deep blue.
