A day pack is a must, and it's essential that it be easy to pack. There are a few ultra-compressible options on the market. Kiva makes a good one. I like the Civita because it has water bottle pockets, which the Kiva does not. The Civita is big enough to hold a rain jacket, book, digital SLR and even a laptop and it can be packed into a small Eagle Creek PackIt cube. 05/02/09
