The snow-capped Panamint Mountains rise behind a giant lake in the bottom of Death Valley, caused by recent heavy flooding, on March 12, 2005 in Death Valley National Park, California. The wettest year on record has brought massive blooms of desert wildflowers and left bodies of water over the normally desiccated landscapes of Death Valley and other California desert regions. At 282 feet below sea level, Death Valley has the lowest elevation in North America and its summertime temperatures are among the hottest on the planet. Tourists have flocked here to see the blooms including first lady Laura Bush. (Photo by David McNew/Getty Images)
