One of the new UNESCO World Heritage sites is Cidade Velha, in Cape Verde off the west coast of Africa. This 15th century Portuguese colonial town was a center for the slave trade, acting as a way station between mainland Africa and Brazil. Columbus stopped here in 1498 on his third trip to the Americas.
