Ruins of the São Filipe fort.

One of the new UNESCO World Heritage sites is Cidade Velha, in Cape Verde off the west coast of Africa. This 15th century Portuguese colonial town was a center for the slave trade, acting as a way station between mainland Africa and Brazil. Columbus stopped here in 1498 on his third trip to the Americas. 28/06/09
