Grand Hotel - Mackinac Island, Michigan

If you haven't been to Mackinac Island, you should go -- it's a small island in Lake Huron which dazzles and delights with historic culture -- no cars allowed, only horse-drawn carriages. There are over 500 horses on the island. If you have been there, you probably know of The Grand Hotel. This 1887 hotel is rich in heritage and steeped in political and celebrity lore. Even if you can't afford to stay there (doubles start at $400 -- including breakfast and dinner), it's worth visiting for a cocktail on the longest front porch in the world. (Really!)

Fun fact: Mackinac Island has only 600 full-year residents -- but over 1 million visitors each year. 06/07/09
