Fort Davis, Texas

With no traffic lights or chain stores, this is not your average Texan -- or American for that matter -- town. Here, in the midst of the Davis Mountains of West Texas, you get a real feel of the Wild West. Fort Davis played a major role in the history of the Southwest as it was a frontier fort, established in 1854 to protect all sorts of travelers, freight wagons, etc. as they made their way along the San Antonio-El Paso Road. Davis Mountain Park is nearby and boasts 2,700 acres of hiking trails, camping sites and even a scenic drive. Take advantage of the nearby University of Texas McDonald Observatory which offers one of the countries darkest skies to watch the stars in.
