AS: What was awful?

BCS: Catering was sometimes short on food, we didn't always have the drinks people wanted, crabby passengers, long all-night flights.

AS: How did you stay up on the all night flights?

BCS: You just did. There was just no way out. The fun came from mostly each other, the other stewardesses, because it was not always possible to strike up a conversation with a passenger. We found goofy ways to entertain ourselves and really did have fun. Often, the passengers found a way to join in, such as ... one time after a meal service, we started singing the Pepsi commercial song in 3-part harmony in the buffet, and when we walked out of the buffet, the whole cabin clapped for us.

AS: What were some of the weird rules they had for stewardesses that they don't have now?

BCS: We had to weigh in, to make sure we weren't overweight. There was a weight for each height. You couldn't be married - that changed before I married your dad, of course - and you couldn't have children. I quit when I got pregnant, and eventually the airline was sued for making everybody quit like that. They settled it in court. I bought your sister's crib with the money.
